Broke a leg. I reckon that a 30+ year old tire has to give up the ghost sometime, sooo

IMG_1120.JPG

Jacked her up, removed the wheels, and she will get two new tires next week.
Got two new front "feet" for da Ole John Deere today;

IMG_1122.JPG

I sent that picture to my Son who replied back that he had never seen two new front tires before. I told him that I had never bought two new front tires either although these were on the tractor when I bought two new rear tires back in 1995. Ouch, I would hate to have to do it now.

The Son will be back to 'tractoring' this weekend planting the food plots. He will seed with the JD, and cover with the Kubota.

Man ya'll work hard at food plots! I planted some elderberry and comfrey (was told both are deer deterrent- HA!) for the wife and the deer won't leave them alone! from 60 yards they look up while still chewing. Makes me feel like asking if they want lead with that!

gonna be a quick casual hunting season!

We used to do clover plots in the creek bottom where we hunt until we figured out all we really needed to do was mow a section of the stilt grass and smartweed that naturally grows there a couple weeks before hunting season. Our deer like the tender new grass that results.

This year we haven’t seen much in the creek bottom but this is what we see pretty much every evening out our kitchen window, along with eight to ten does and fawns. I mowed that area about a month ago. That and all the development around us is really messing with their habits. Can’t blame them. It bothers me, too.

Carried them off to the brush pile, and stacked the possible firewood elsewhere ...

Cleaned up the 2X's the previous owner left, nails and all too ...

Looks like I should be able to get under that tree now!

Sadly I had to dig a grave today, thank goodness for the tooth-bar. The first time I didn’t enjoy operating the tractor since I bought it.

My gentle girl of 12 years had to be euthanized. She went downhill in a week, from being fine for an old girl to not eating and barely drinking water. Took her in to get checked and she had cancer pretty bad. No sign of pain or anything. Lot of tears especially for my daughter who brought her into this world, had to pull her out by hand. She was the runt, last out, of a litter of 12. Had to be hand fed because she couldn’t get past all the other pups but still ended up at 65 lbs. Great with kids, scared the hell out of strangers.

I had to do the same back in June. It’s not easy. Best friend for 8 years got it in his thyroid’s. Sorry for your families loss.

Sorry for your loss, been thru this too many times, especially hard with the kids.
We dread the day when we will have to do this for our dog, but love the time we have with her, I'm sure your family did the same.

It's hard to say good by to friends, but just try to remember the good times ... And glad that your were able to put her in her final resting place yourself.

My earlier trimming job, seems like it worked!

Yep, you need a grapple!
Not really worth it for my situation ... I've got less than half a dozen more trees to "trim" ... The majority of my 16 acres is open fields ... Not only would I have to add a third function, but buy the actual grapple ... Probably $3-4,000 ... I can haul a lot of branches on the forks I already have for that!

After the delivery of about 300m3 of soil and levelling the garden, it was final time to sow grass.
therefor i rented a power harrow seeder combi and got the job done. It was great fun to sow nearly 800m2 grass while driving my tractor.

I'm curious, what grass variety do you Dutchmen grow?
I used a mixture of 10 different grasses.
  • 30% Timothee: Phleum pratense
  • 10% Veldbeemdgras: Poa pratensis
  • 15% Beemdlangbloem: Festuca pratensis
  • 10% Engels raaigras: Lolium perenne
  • 15% Roodzwenkgras: Festuca rubra
  • 10% Kropaar: Dactylis glomerata
  • 10% Rietzwenkgras: Festuca arundinacea
Bold is the percentage and dutch name.
This is a special mixture for horses. The grasses produce less fructane.
Usually a meadow used for grazing is sown with a mixture of different rye grasses.
