Block heaters are cheap and very quick to install and they not only heat the water, but they heat the steel and the oil all in one unit.
They are also fairly quick to heat and have internal temp switches to turn them on an off to keep the heater from burning up.

When I lived in New Hampshire back in the early 1960's, my '55 Chevy didn't like the cold. We would put a shovel of hot coals under the engine to warm the oil to get it started. When you heard the oil crackling, you knew it was warm enough to start. Sure do miss that car!
