As the title says , what am I missing in my repairs and diagnose of a 540cc Briggs and Stratton Intek overhead valve engine.
I recently made a trade with a neighbor that moved for his 2012 Craftsman YT3000 riding mower. I believe these mowers are also branded under the Husqvarna name.
The neighbor said the tractor would not restart after running for half hour or so, and he would need to remove the spark plug and wire brush the soot and fouling off.
After getting the tractor , indeed it was running very rich, would blow black smoke whenever you rapidly increased the throttle or at times hitting a slightly denser grass even though I just barely ran it before delving into it.
This is what I have checked or replaced.
Changed oil , new filter. not overfull and no smell of gas or diluted by gas.
new fuel filter
New air filter and checked intake and intake manifold for any obstructions
Replaced OEM Nikki carb with new Chinese clone carb
Checked choke cable, linkage and butterfly, choke butterfly opening completely and solidly.
Adjusted idle fuel/air mixture screw as per online instructions
Did not check float level as there are no adjustments. All plastic internal parts.
Checked valve lash
Installed and gapped new spark plug
Checked crankcase to intake manifold hose
Checked engine blow-by by pulling the oil filler tube cap while running and did not notice any excess blow-by. When shut engine down, a few wisps of vapor will come out of tube.
Checked ignition coil and gap to magnet in flywheel.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After all that I still have a rich condition but it is much better. I will describe now what the tractor runs like.
Starts and idles fine, goes to mid rpms fine and then to high rpms. No smoke even if rapid increase in rpm's.
Smells slightly rich but I do not see visible smoke with it stationary .
When I drove it and mowed , pretty rough yard as far as jostling around, but still level ground , occasionally and momentarily it will puff out black smoke. 1/2 hour of mowing my eyes were slightly burning from being rich. I could smell the rich condition. The mower cut grass, never stumbled or surged, responded to change in throttle and governor seemed to work if I hit thicker grass.
Since I have ran it what I have not done is pull new plug to see the color and if any noticeable fouling. Unlike before I changed out the carb and did the other items it will restart hot after 1/2 hour of running without issues.
One item I have not done is a compression check.
Any thoughts would be appreciated .
