I had a PJ car hauler and really liked it, shoulda kept it! Too bad you aren't closer.. I'd take that off your hands so you could get what you really want!😁
I'm thinking a 16' PJ for my BX would be about right and not over sized for my midsize truck.

trailers in general have gotten crazy, aluminum even worse. Aluminum to me, was totally worth it when I was driving the half ton. I am sad to be parting with it next month because if I had to buy it new today, I couldn't afford it!
I bought a 10'x5' aluminum CargoPro utility trailer back in 2014. I paid $2,700 for it new (thought that was expensive at the time) and bought it to pull behind my Jeep TJ. It only weighs 450lb so it gives me about 1,500lb of capacity behind the Jeep. It's such a good little trailer that I've used so many times over the years. I should have replaced the plywood floor with aluminum decking plate when it was $600 but kept putting it off. Now it's at least twice that.

And here's a BX "in" a 16' PJ dump trailer. :LOL: I still have the truck and the trailer but the BX moved on to a better home.

the new 20 foot-ish PJ trailers being sold locally are around $8,000, the tilt deck versions are almost $18,000, before taxes and add-ons. At the end of the day they are just a trailer. If I had to buy my 20' aluminum sport haven today it would be $10,000, it's just stupid. I will sell the sport haven once the new one arrives. I just needed another foot or two. 20 feet for tractor, plus a few attachments, is barely enough space.

I ordered a 15,000 lb 22' dovetail from Appalachian Trailers a few weeks ago. It's not a "Big Tex" or a "PJ" name but I just cant see where the extra $5k-10k goes??? In 10 years, they will all be the same pile of swiss cheese junk (except the aluminum one 😁) .

That's a steel framed trailer right?

I bought the 22' 15k MidSota dovetail equipment trailer at the end of Febuary last year for $5,600. It had been used twice and was in "like new" condition. It's the trailer I use the most and it's a keeper. I couldn't justify spending more for a tilt up trailer. If I were loading/unloading daily then sure, but for my needs a dovetail and ramps is just fine.

I ended up removing the springs that assist the loading ramps due to the need to remove the ramps on a number of occasions. It's "easy" to take the ramps on and off once the springs were removed.

Another point of reference. Up here a 22' 14k PJ tilt trailer is $12,800 and a 20' 14k PJ tilt trailer is $12,500 with no sales tax. Almost 2.3 times the cost of the MidSota I have.

that looks really good, nice and roomy! Your mid-sota is priced right about where the "Appalachian" trailers are, fingers crossed.

I agree about the tilt bed too, ramps with dove tail are really a non-event.

And the one in your link doesn't have a non-tilting area to place an implement or other equipment if necessary.

Pilots live up here too you know! I just had a friend at the house this morning to complete the Form 4 for a suppressor (silencer) transfer. He's a pilot for Southwest Airlines. He has a 40 year old Massey Ferguson that he uses to cut his 12 acre pasture and was drooling over the two Kubotas, the flail and the rotary cutter. :LOL:

IIRC, appalachian trailers is owned by Kaufman now. The reason that you can get them for a better price than most (like PJ, Big Tex etc) is because there is no dealer network, hence, no additional dealer markup.

Appalachian makes their own trailers in Ohio and only sells them from the Ohio plant and a single location in Mannheim, PA.

That works just fine for me.

I originally bought my 16' PJ when I had a BX23 and Tacoma. It is just about perfect for that. :) Although there were still issues loading if I didn't have a hill to back up to, especially with the mower on.

Just like the OP, I was looking for something somewhat lightweight since I had a lighter tow vehicle. Tow rating for the Tacoma was I think 6000#, though I may be misremembering that. Down the road I moved to a Tundra, then sold the BX23 and got the B2650. The B2650 still fits on the 16'. Now I'm already considering a move to a slightly bigger tractor in the next few years, at which point I'll definitely need a bigger trailer, hopefully not a bigger truck. :rolleyes:

Is this 16' + 2' or 16' total? Plenty of room for a bb it looks like. I never measured mine all together but it looks like it will fit. Thanks for the pics!

Yesterday, I took delivery of our new PJ brand, 14K, 20' dovetail car hauler.
I wanted the larger tires, 6" frame, and 7k axles. With aluminum wheels, including aluminum spare, front toolbox and a couple other dohickeys it was about 8,500.

My concern now is wether I have to stop at the hiway scales ??

I'll be traveling cross country, non commercial. Personal use only.

My first answer would be "Nope". Since you aren't commercial. I get the nicer wheels and tires but did it really need to be rated at 14K? If not, you could de-rate it to 10K and not have to worry at all. I don't think they get into into a tizzy unless your pulling a gooseneck.

What are you pulling it with? Is your GCWR over 26K?

My Ford F250 is just under 8k. Total will be under 26K.
I be using it for moving around my LX2610, and moving my Jeep Wrangler, Polaris RZR, etc etc.
I'll never get close to the trailer's capacity.
I've broken leaf springs and had too many blowouts with trailer tires. The D rated tires on the 10k trailers turned me off completely.

what any of the stuff weighs doesn't matter, your F250 is prob 10k with a GCWR 23,500. 14k trailer will put you over the limit for the truck in the event you are inspected. What matters are ratings and combined rating.
