I took my used oil from the Isuzu change to Advanced Auto.

I inquired about how to dispose of used coolant. They have a barrel for that, too. Used to have to wait for a day at the local landfill.

Nobody here in the Rockford IL area will take coolant and even finding places to dispose of waste oil is getting hard

I recently took about 35 gallons of used UDT2 and motor oil to Advance auto. I didn't think they accepted coolant at some locations.

Never had an issue getting rid of either . My uncle burns waste oil to heat the shop. And antifreeze you can typically get rid of pretty easily at a Walmart, or advanced/auto zone.

County landfill here takes tires, batteries, coolant, and oil. Easy dump bulk recycling tanks for fluids and never ever a wait. Given the scale its probably profitable.

Maybe it’s just a state regulation. Here auto parts stores that sell oil and service stations that change oil are required to accept up to 5 gallons per day from non-business individuals. Most will take more within reason as they know you’ll be back the next day and the day after until it’s all gone. Coolant has to go to the one landfill site in the county that will take hazardous materials.

Where I live (Vermont) there are strict environmental laws.
There is a "Hazzardous Waste Depot" where we MUST take anything deemed hazardous.

It is always free to get rid of this stuff to encourage folks to not dump it in the environment.

As an example, here is website for the local "Hazzardous Waste Depot":

This thread makes me question a lot 🤣

20 years of dealing with all sorts of fluids everyday, they all end up in the same barrel…

Not where I live.
You are 20 years in the past.... check out the link in my post#9

Infact, it is Vermont state law that ALL State vehicle must use recycled lubricants and fluids. (Vermont has one of the largest fleet of snowplow vehicles in the nation)

Just had waste oil and waste antifreeze tanks drained 3 weeks ago at work. Guy finished emptying the waste oil tank, then without missing a beat, connected the same hose going to the same tank on his truck to the waste antifreeze and drained it. Then sucked the containment dry.

I keep them separated. But the majority of disposal drivers don't.

The correct term is actually re-refined. It is a more costly process than using virgin crude due to vacuum distillation to remove dirt, water and used additives, and then hydro-treatments to remove any remaining chemical contaminants. At that point it can be sent for re-refining. But it looks great on paper for saving the planet, even though it uses more energy in the process.
The most common use for used petroleum products is industrial heating in power plants and factories.
The most sensible use is on site industrial heating due to EPA cradle-to-grave liability laws. Bonus to this is, I have never had a heating bill for my shop in 30 years of operation.

one other thing, who actually enforces this?

again, I’m not in Vermont, but I’ve dealt with public owned vehicles for 20 years and counting, never have had special fluids to dump in them…

(another side note, these tax payer owned vehicles aren’t electric 😉)

Wonder if they are going to burn them together or if they get separated wherever they end up?

I have no idea. Talking to the drivers, once there truck is full, they head to Louisianna to off load.

Safety clean has a depot up the street from us. Figure it gets transferred to train cars and shipped somewhere else.
