So I'd been working at our local state park for the past 17 summers. (Teacher by trade.) The equipment operator who ran the beach groomer, damaged so much equipment over the years that they finally just canned him. I was asked if I might want to take over on the groomer. (It's like an oversized lawn sweeper.) My first thought was "Now wait, you want to know if I will groom the beaches in an air conditioned tractor with stereo...and you're going to pay me?"

So I spent my summer grooming beaches, starting at 6am every day. (We have 8 beaches, and I could get 4-5 done each day before park visitors booted me off.) I had a smile on my face every day...could not believe they were actually paying me to do it. Only drawback was that I was in an JD, lol. Here's a shot I got of a sunrise off one of our beaches.

I did not find the 3 cases, but if you can give me the coordinates I'll be grooming one last time on Sunday. If I find them I will be sure to let you know how they were.;)

Hey coach, I was wondering if they require a permit to metal detect on the beaches now. Would you mind asking if you think about it

Out of curiosity, how did the previous operater manage to smash up equipment while running it up and down a sandy beach ?
It wasn't so much the damage he did with the beach groomer, it was 10s of thousands of dollars in damage he did to other equipment and the park itself. He openly admitted that "if you're not breaking $hit, you're not running it hard enough."

He ran e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g wide open.

He was anything but the sharpest tool in the shed.

As for the groomer itself, he'd hit lifeguard chairs at full speed as well as bury the machine in the sand.

No permit necessary. I see guys doing it every day. I normally do this one beach in particular at 6am (it's the most heavily used) and there's a guy out there almost every morning. He typically does his detecting out in the water. I often think that he he's either very determined or his hobby is a lucrative one.

I did talk to a guy the other day who said he had found a brass Navy button earlier in the day.

I think what they're all looking to score, is the diamond ring.

We used to belong to a metal detecting club that had a monthly contest for best find, oldest coin, best jewelry, etc.
One guy was vacationing in Texas, where he went detecting in a beach area of a reservoir that had been drained for dam repairs. In the mud, he found a strip of those self-adhesive, stick-on wheel balance weights. He threw it in his pouch, and at the end of the day, cleaned it & found it was a gold & platinum men's bracelet that appraised at over $9000.

I just want to find my beer :D
Though years ago I was hunting on the beach at Bethany and I ran into an old guy and his wife that were hunting the beach also and you know how it goes,, hey ya find anything this morning ,,yadayadayada ,, in the course of us talking his wife says tell him about that big ring you found last summer. So he says they live in summy Fla but travel a lot, and he was hunting a beach and got a very strong signal.. He digs it up and finds a large mans diamond ring. I said wow that must have pretty neat to find something like that.. He said not really, I asked him why? He said the guys hand was still in the ring, called the cops and never saw the ring again.. She said thats last time he ever calls the cops when he finds something.
