Found this 4" cylinder x 8" stroke in my collection of stuff that I'm going to modify for the swing cylinder. I remember buying this brand new in the early 90's and never used it.
I know there is going to be dangerous power with a cylinder this big and I will have to address this. But the speed will certainly be slower.
Took it apart and threaded the shaft to accept the rod end. Set to go back together and if the weather cooperates, will get some paint on it.

Well, stump number one is in the books. It was about a 30" pine stump and it took about 15 minutes. I'll get faster as I get the hang of it.
One casualty was the flap. Worked good until I got on the far end of the stump at ground level. One experiment I might try is reversing the teeth and wheel rotation and see how that works. No hopping with the wheel sending the chips backwards toward the tractor, which is a good thing. Reversing it might be a different story. Only one way to find out. Then the flap wouldn't have to be so substantial in the back.

Here are some pictures of a 12" cottonwood stump that I ground down in about 5 minutes. Took the last two pictures from the seat, hence the poor quality.

It sure feels good grinding down stumps doesn't it. Especially with something that you've made yourself. I know I enjoy using mine. Good job on the build and be safe while using it.

I can only imagine how satisfying and rewarding it must be putting that beast into action.
So what, one or two down, 198 to go....lol, have fun.
You got me thinking surely the old timers solution involves less patience.....black powder or dynamite lol.

Thanks everyone for all the nice comments! And I want to thank everyone that followed this build! You made me 'hold my feet to the fire'.
While I'm grinding stumps this fall, I'll be dreaming up something for my winter build.

I didn't notice any difference like I thought I would. Would like to get better control of the down feed cylinder to better control the depth of cut. Going to try machining some restrictor fittings for that cylinder.

Your detailed and well written post on building this beautiful piece of machinery is undoubtedly hands down the most enjoyable post that I have ever followed!
I occasionally make a post with a few pics and it can take an amazing amount of time to do just a few pics with a good description/explanation - and here you are with dozens (hundreds?) of updates with dozens (hundreds?) of pictures. This had to eat into your work time on this involved build!!
And believe you me ---- we APPRECIATE IT!!
