Hey guys a question, I found a network on my computer and I have no idea what it is! So the network is NTGR VMB with a bunch of numbers after it. I am plugged right in to the modem and not the wifi. Anybody have a clue what this might be ?

Google search indicated that it is a wifi security camera system.

Any wifi within signal distance will show along with signal strength, whether it is secure or open. All you need to worry about is having your connection password protected to prevent those other folks using it.

Do you have any close neighbors, it could be their system, your computer is sensing.

NOT IF YOU DO AS I SAID ABOVE, repeated below in bold print

What do you mean network on your computer? It could just mean that your computer can see it, and there is no connection at all.

Go to Network & Internet Settings>WiFi>Manage Known Networks. Then click "forget" next to NTGR VMB

Turn off your wifi and re-check. It is probably just a nearby wifi signal that your system is seeing. Unless you connect to it, there is no harm that can be done.

Are you yelling at me ?
No,I'm simply highlighting the answer to make it less likely to be missed a second time. I totally understand why you are uncomfortable thinking strangers have access to your computer.

How close are your neighbors?
Maybe someone planted it in your house, hidden somewhere 😳

my mom had this issue, or similar-but worse actually

I went into the router and looked at all of the users, there were like 60. Mom has one computer and one phone that both run off of wifi. That's all. Those two were easy to find, the other 58 were the neighbors.

Found out, that even though her router was password protected, the neigbor guessed the password and "got into it"--and was using HER internet (for free). That neighbor is well-known for taking advantage of people.

I had proof that it was him....phone was named as such, and was one of the users listed. I went over there and we had a discussion. Not a bad discussion, we just had a talk. Nothing came of it, other than the fact that we came to an agreement that it won't happen again-ever. He admitted fault.

I changed mom's password, she had it set up such that I guess it was pretty easy to guess. Oddly, after doing that, her wifi works a LOT faster now.

I am not tech savvy either. But I was able to "google" (actually used a different search engine since my computer doesn't like google for some stupid reason) the model of the router and then added the terms "how to set password". Had it fixed in 10 minutes once I figured out how to get into the router.

I would suggest doing this, and I also like to change the name of the router to something that makes people ask questions. Mine is IRS CID_4032.

If changing things in the router like passwords, you can also hide/disable the SSID broadcast. That is, the wifi does not "advertise" that it exists. The only way you connect to it is you have to know the name of the wifi first, enter it into your laptop "connect to" wifi menu, and then use your password to connect.

Test after hiding the SSID. Some devices (older phones, ROKU, cameras etc.) do not connect to hidden SSID networks. Just test each device after you hide the SSID to be sure all devices work. Also, some devices will not reconnect to a hidden SSID after the device is restarted so check that too.
