Jugs of Shell Rotella T6, in 0W-40, are being discontinued at Advanced Auto...

$5.95 for a 4 quart jug, both the older CJ and CK version can be found...

I cleaned out 7 stores, and got 31 jugs total...

Not sure what you’re using it in, but I don’t think I’d put a 0w in my tractor....don't know of diesel tractor that takes a 0w-40, but I'm sure there are some now.

My Spec calls for 10w-30. I use a T6 5w-40 in mine, but I believe 5w-40 and 15w-40 are proven options.

My gas engine truck uses a 0w-20, and the thing sounds like a bucket of bolts when running cold. Less than 35k miles, a 2017. Always sounded that way.

Started my kid’s 2019 Honda CRV at Christmas and I thought it was knocking. Takes 0-20 oil. When warmed, was quiet. Oil was full and new. Less than 27k miles.

I will always use it if specified, but unless prescribed by the manufacturer, I wouldn’t use 0w in anything.

I agree with RCW, most Kubota manuals recomend SAE10W-30 (very cold areas) or SAE 15W-40.

A lot of that noise you hear on cold starts on those vehicles are due to a combination of the variable cam timing strategy and direct fuel injection strategy to aid in getting engine up to operating temp quicker. Direct fuel injection is inherently noisy anyways, thats the reason for all the covers and insulators over fuel system components on modern vehicles

I really expected to see no oil in it....it was noisy. After a few minutes at 25 degrees, it was smooth and quiet.

25 degrees is pretty normal for this time of year here.

Heck, Christmas Day 1980 we had -36 at my house. My 1967 Chevy Caprice started so I could go to work....

Your explanation makes sense...thanks again.

I still don’t like 0w, unless called for.....

yes no need to worry, wife’s Mazda is the same way. And a quick look and it looks like Chevy switched the 5.3 to VVT and direct injection for 2017? Likely why you now notice the noise, its not due to 0 weight oil.

0W40 or 0W20 etc etc.... does not equate to “zero” oil. It’s only referencing a viscosity-verses-temperature scale used by refiners for the purpose of gauging “flowability”.

If your Owner / Operator Manual approves it for existing ambient temperature ranges then it’s fine to use it. The other issue is whether the obsolete Class Rating (CI or CK) is applicable to your engine. If that rating is also approved then you’re good-to-go to use it.

Otherwise, it might be nice to have 124 quarts of the stuff to keep your general-purpose oil-can filled and keep your door-hinges lubed. (And, of course, if you’re a fan of Advance Auto, to bail them out of their foolish decision to stock an unpopular product at the price they likely paid for it.)

True - this is a '17 Chevy 5.3l w/VVT.

Guess I need to stop blaming the 0w oil....thanks again for the education!
