Shear Pin or Slip Clutch

Buying a 60" brush/grass cutter is the slip clutch worth the extra 180 dollars compared to standard shear Pin ??

I thought so when I bought mine a few weeks ago. Shear pins are a pain in the butt. I am cutting mostly brush and alders though so maybe if you are using yours for lighter work you might want to save your money.

Worth it is going to depend on how much you plan to use it. Once a year, probably not a big deal, regularly get the slip clutch. Changing shear pins can be a pain to deal with. I don't have a brushhog but I've broken some snow blower and post hold digger bolts. If you go with a shear bolt, carry extras with you or Murphy will guarantee you break lots at the most inopportune time.

A slip clutch is nice as long as you keep it maintained and set right. Otherwise I can give you a world of hurt if it doesn't slip when it is supposed to.

ItBmine, makes a very critical point. If you have a slip clutch and never adjust it (or use it on more than one tractor) you can cause damage to you PTO clutch. That will cost much more than a bag of sheer pins!!

I vote shear pin because of this. All my equipment has slip clutches but a shear pin is easier to maintain. You still need to take the shear pin out on occasion to make sure the pto shaft isn’t rusted to the gearbox shaft.

Just bought a Land Pride 2072 -- slip clutch only way to go for me.

I have the Kioti 60" medium duty. rotary cutter (made by woods). I hit some serious metal in high grass along my road fence line that was not there last year. The slip clutch worked as designed with no damage to the gear box. I now walk that fence line looking for any debris thrown over the fence from the road.

I vote shear pin because of this. All my equipment has slip clutches but a shear pin is easier to maintain. You still need to take the shear pin out on occasion to make sure the pto shaft isn’t rusted to the gearbox shaft.


Another very good point. Ocassionaly make sure the shafts aren't seized together.

Like they say....maintenance is key.

DITTO my experience is most people don't free up/adjust slip clutch at the beginning of season therefore slip clutch is virtually non-operational.

I've had both and for me the getting on/off the tractor, grabbing a hammer, punch, new pin and repeating is more frustration than maintaining a slip clutch.

I vote for the slip clutch but ONLY if one is gonna set it up/adjust at the beginning of each season. Not gonna do that ? Get the shear pin.
