So thinking little out of the box. Considering movable side mirrors on my truck I can move from inside truck. Large movements. Basically sideways Submarine periscope. Extend a foot and a half and/or retract it right next to cab. Not a little truck; poor mans Expedition camper based on Military truck, and can get in tight quarters off road so being able to retract mirror in tight to cab is just as important as moving it out far to better see trailer or?? beside and behind me.

here is my crazy idea. Mount a thru the cab tube on each side of truck in a space I can reach. Insert a tube thru this solid mounted to cab tube (telescoping). Mount a few brackets inside for it to slide inside/along for stability. Rubber in mounts for anti vibration. Put mirror outside on the sliding tube. Now I can slide mirror in and out... even rotate up and down if I want. Can't exactly reach the passenger mirror.. being it is nearly 7 feet a way with a 2.5' tall hump between me and passenger side so a long tube that reaches across cab would be required here. For sure this idea greatly helps passenger side changes.

But how to make it not leak in rain etc.? Any ideas on how to water tight this tube in a tube arrangement?

You could look at motorcycle front fork dust seals, for the old fashioned type of fork, they come in various sizes, if you chose your pipes to suit the diameters.

Great idea. Was thinking hydraulic ram seals as well. Your idea probably better/easier.

Those dust seals are designed to give minimum striction, or resistance, that's what got me thinking as I just replaced some on my old honda tlr200 trials bikes.
Hold fire though, someone might have a better idea.

For the passenger side, how about a linear actuator, or an air cylinder if you have air brakes. You could easily control them from the drivers seat

Party pooper here, single rod wont work,it will fall. Unless you bracket it inside to control it. How is window going to work? Have to go through glass or window regulator. The linear actuator would work. Would need a power mirror also-as mirror moves so does the perspective.wow, i used an odd yet fitting word in a sentence. Some days i suprise me....

One word: CAMERA
You can mount a couple of WP cameras on the back of the body and see way more than a fixed mirror will see. ;)

You just learned my secret plan. Mirror is required by law..... but thought was to put camera on the home made pan/tilt mirror and save few thousand dollars on cost of pan/tilt cameras.

What is WP?

Waterproof? Dunno.
Cameras would be the ticket. A security camera system, inverter to run display and you got every corner covered. Just need reversible image for the rears.

They sell side view cameras with two to 4 split screen set ups at 12 and 24v. Problem is doubt they will hold up to tree branches etc.

So on second thoughts to setting up retracting sideview mirror w/camera don't think this will work. No room for twin post which would be needed to resist Wind. Will have to go with rear cameras and a tiny side looking down camera and place a limb slider over it.
