Rotary cutter deal. Is it worth it?

Potentially looking at a small rotary cutter tomorrow. My new B2650 will be delivered tomorrow or Wednesday, and I have located my first used implement...

It is a Land Pride RCR1248. Photos make it look like new, and the lady I spoke with about it today says they’ve only used it a couple of times to mow a one acre lot. They now use their regular mower, as the brush is all gone. Sounded like a nice older couple, and I know the area they live in. Very nice area with mostly retired folk.

They’re asking $800 for it. It’s a little under half of new price.

Go? No go?

I know it’s the light duty model, so I’m keeping that in mind. My use will be basic field and light brush mowing. I’d really like to have a 60”, but if the deal is good...

Thoughts?

What are you going to be cutting with it? If just grass then its probably ok, but its probably not going to cover the track of the 2650. If its brush i think the 12 series was 1” diameter rated, i got the 1860 on a little bigger tractor and it say 2” max. Ive found out it the tractor can run it over the mower can cut it up (i know not the best advice) but no issues with the mower besides the brush ripping up the rubber belting in front of the mower.

Good call on the track width. I think my smart money is on holding out for a 60” unit. Especially one in a heavier duty series...

I agree with Fordtech. You'd be disappointed with that small of a mower.

I run an RCR1860 on my B2650 with no issues.

I have the 1272 mower. As you pointed out it is rated for 1" and mine has taken a beating and keeps on going. I have the L3560 and looking at the chart from Land Pride, you could handle the 60 inch, which as others have pointed out would most likely be a better size for you.

Thanks fellas. I’ll pass on this. Someone with a smaller tractor will hopefully find it. Sure looks like a really nice small mower for the money...

You might consider this as a use/invest/resell option.

If you can negotiate an even better price, pick it up, try it out, resell it for a small profit or trade value for a larger rig.

Win, win, win.

I believe it's about right for your 2650 unless you plan to cut heavy brush, in which case you may want a more HD model.

Yes, it will not cover your tire tracks but it will also not overload your tractor, either power wise or weight.

I also think that the price is OK, if it is as described. Used 48" rotary cutters are not common.

I have an RCR1260 - I have mowed about 4 acres of 2-3' tall weeds and grass and some thicker material like burs. It has chewed through everything quite well. I originally started with it set at about 8" but after 1/2 an acre or so I dropped it down to 2" and it kept going without any issue.

I had a few areas with some small sumac and other saplings I just raised it up and backed in then slowly lowered it down and it chewed everything up with out issue.
