I have had customers to comment to me that my sawmilling rates are a bit higher than other sawyers that they talked to.

My answer is that they know what their sawing is worth. Funny thing is that after talking, they hired me.

I had similar customers but the ones I really loved were those that said your bid is just rediculusly high, we will get it replaced cheaper. Then a year, maybe 6 months they pay me to redo the cheaper job

times before in less than three years.. I paid for those repairs and not for the absurd price of 95 bucks an hour. It is a brand I found later he discontinued selling due to repeated
problems, one they still had on hand that they dumped on me. The look on
face when I braced him on that was priceless.
Yes I did dress him down with great pleasure, he deserved it. The guy is a
crook and dishonest and I told him so to his face. Shivering , you dang
sure right and not because he was upset with me.
The reason I used him was to give him a chance to do right by me
for selling me a heater he knew to be defective, instead he ripped me
off again.
No, not looking for sympathy, don't need it or want it because I stood up
to a unscrupulous dealer.

Isn't Skratch the one who has threads focusing on when things are going to end, and discussing abstract things? Maybe he doesn't have time to discover DIY solutions. Or maybe it's below his pay grade.

Replacing a thermocoupling in a water heater takes about as long as it probably took the service man to get there. But...you have to have it to put in, and know how to get to it. A You Tube search would quickly solve the DIY part!

Once you hire someone, whether you ask the cost or not, you're ethically responsible to pay the charge. If that charge doesn't suit your idea of fair price, giving him "...a good dressing down he won't soon forget", reflects on you....not the service person.

Yes that's me, I like to start threads on something thought provoking, a
tractor isn't very thought provoking. Some must have enjoyed my
threads judging by the replies, and no, believe me it is not below my pay
grade.

Why would you have the same unscrupulous dealer come back and repair it?
Why not get someone you deem honest to come work on it, it's clearly not a warrant part so there is no reason for you to use them and for you to complain about buying a cheap unit to begin with.

I own several businesses and when I have some do what you did (chew me or one of my service persons out) I put you on the black list and will not deal with you again, period.

And yea I would be shaking too... shaking from holding back not clocking you!

Read my post, I was willing to give the guy a chance to rectify his dishonest
dealing with me, he held true to form and didn't. The unit he sold me damn sure wasn't cheap, full price with no disclosure. He took advantage of my family and I never let that behavior go without response. As for as his shaking it was
because he was confronted with the truth and of his fear I would clock HIM, which I would never do. A verbal
confrontation with a slight dose of anger is better, he will remember that there might be another customer
who might be not so forgiving. The guy is dishonest, I owe him no apology,
the opposite is due. And, I will never deal with him again and encourage
others not do so, PERIOD. He is on MY black list.

I should have been more explicit in my original post, I was still running on
anger and should not have posted without more consideration.

My labor rate is $180 an hour. So if you live an hour away and it takes 4 hours total for travel and repair labor alone is $720. $95 is looking good my friend. I do not own my own business I work for the man!

So 4 repairs that you had to pay for???
What the unit never had a warranty?

Again, you think the guy's a crook yet you've had him back to repair the issue 4 different times????

How do you know know that they discontinued selling them due to issues?
And that sounds to me like if it is the case, then they are not crocks, they are just smart business people.
I would stop selling products I found to be unreliable.
Just because they sold a product and installed it doesn't mean they are responsible for making that product, that's the manufacturer's responsibility.

I'm actually up for more women doing the trades the men traditionally do.

For example, we hired a hand at work through a temp agency. The job was a yard hand/ equipment associate. They do the easy quick check in process for the rental equipment and help load/ unload the customers, as well as keeping the yard neat and tidy.

4 different men couldn't hack it for the position. Either it was BS attitude, really poor work ethic, or they just couldn't get it and needed someone constantly directing them.

Then along comes Erin. A 24 y/o girl, about 5'4" tall and skinny as a rail.

She would run circles around the guys. Put her on task, and the job got done. If she got pulled away due to a customer or some other distraction. Once she was done with the side duty, she is right back on task. And the best part, there's a smile on her face and no attitude and BS. Show her how to do something once, and she has it.

I had her out last week with me for an install job for a wellpoint system. After the first day, I turned her loose in charge of the other hands. She had two guys sanding well points, One guy keeping me in risers so I had them available while I directed the stinger and pump operator, and she followed behind me hooking everything up and tuning while still directing the other hands.

All I know is, gals are much better shots at the gun club I belong to. Every year consistently, a gal wins the 50 foot smallbore indoor competition and not always the same gal either.

...and yes, they smell better and are easier to look at than the old men who shoot, me included.... *(hope bearbait isn't offended by that)*

Much steadier and concentrate better than their male counterparts.

Dealership I retired from had 2 female diesel technicians and they always did a good job, showed up everyday for work and were exceptionally neat and organized. Diesel mechanics are traditionally a male job but in reality shouldn't be.

If I required a plumber or an electrician or appliance repair person, I don't much care about their sex, so long as the job gets done and done right the first time.
