I have a 23 kubota 3901. When I originally purchased the tractor the R4 where good for what I needed. Now we are going to put in a 4 acer garden for some ho.e use and retail.
I don't think the r4 will have traction pulling 2 bottom plow.

I don't think it's going to be that big of a problem. Switching tires/wheels is pretty expensive.

Have you thought about chaining up for that job or renting a different machine. Also, you can plow in multiple passes.

I haven't thought of the chains. May try that before laying out $$ for tires.

But would chains give much, if any, advantage on ground/soil? And I would think plowing in two passes would be rough ride the second pass; with traction being even worse the second pass. Is plowing an absolute requirement? That moves/loosens a lot of soil.

Or another thought maybe you should consider a rotor tiller. Traction shouldn't be an issue then.

Chains will absolutely help On dirt/soil. I don’t have ag tires, so I have no comparison.

Will a second pass hurt? It depends if the tires are outside the turned over dirt or not.

If you're plowing a field twice, you have to run over the first pass with both tires since the entire area has been worked so I think it will be a rough ride the second time. Will admit I've never seen anyone use chains on tires when tilling ground; would be interesting to see.

I think it depends on your soil conditions and how deep you want to go. About a month ago, I needed bare ground around a brush pile to burn it. The most convenient thing was to put the 2 bottom on my L35. I had my doubts since the R4's aren't loaded and my loader isn't removable, which takes weight off the rear. It pulled the plow fine in my silty soil; granted I was only going deep enough to turn the grass over.

The one thing that sticks in my mind from pulling that thing a couple of days 50+ years ago with our Massey Ferg MF50 is, if you don't have your wheel width set properly you're going to get worked to death. I think chains is not a bad idea, timber cutters use them on their skidders when necessary, as long as you can set your wheels narrow enough for the plow without the chains rubbing the fenders.

4 acres huh? That'll be some garden!

Have a neighbor with equipment required plow or disc the area then buy a tiller. I'd first try plowing with existing tires. You might be surprised.

Buying mud chains or swapping wheels and tires is a lot of $$$ to address an assumed problem that may or may not exist. If the rears are loaded, I would definitely try it in low range 4WD before spending any time or money on modifications. If the rears aren’t loaded, you’ll likely need to load them, but that’s relatively cheap and easy to do yourself (and undo yourself if you don’t want to keep them loaded). Also, if you normally run high pressure on the rears, drop it to 12lb to 15lb for the plowing. The R4’s lesser ability to shed mud due to stiffer sidewalls shouldn’t be a substantial factor. If you’re plowing in a mud hole you need to let it dry out before plowing anyway.

I’ve never run moldboard plows behind my L. I have run a pair of 16” moldboards behind a Farmall H. Of course the H is 2WD with R1’s and it pulls them well because that’s one of the jobs it was purpose designed to perform. I also know, in a variety of soil types and conditions, the drawbar pull on my L with loaded rears, FWA, and R4’s is substantially more than the drawbar on the H.

No, I can’t quantify the max drawbar for either tractor, but I know I had to upgrade some of the rigging we had for tree work because the L was busting rigging that was adequate for the H. Also know the L has moved a few things that the H couldn’t budge.

I’m quite sure R1’s will pull more than R4’s in dirt on the same tractor. That doesn’t mean you can’t pull a couple of moldboard plows with loaded R4’s aired down appropriately. I would sure give it a go before busting out the checkbook.

If you do need to spend money, mud chains for the rear are a good bit cheaper than new wheels and tires.

I used a single bottom plow on my old L3800 with loaded R1’s. Still would run out of traction at times.

Do you already have a 2 bottom plow? Could always remove one plow from it.

Could also be done with a tiller. Where in FL are you? Anyone local with a bigger tractor to help get it started?

None of this wonderful advice is gonna help him convince his wife he needs R1s, but it’ll probably help with a new tiller. :D

The advice will help if he can convince her that any additional purchase is for her benefit! My 3902 was delivered on my wife's birthday so I told her it was her birthday present. 😅
