Well, another problem. There is a bad grinding noise when I release the clutch pedal after engaging the PTO lever.
I tightened up the cable from the lever good n tight, and the noise was not as loud, but still there was grinding sound while engaged.
There is a 4 bolt flange where the PTO shaft goes in.
Is it possible to remove that flange and pull the shaft out for inspection?
Thanks

I my have overtightened the cable, but the grinding/clacking sounded a little less.
So I dont reckon pulling out the pto shaft to see if the teeth are worn out is not a good idea?

Yes I did look at your video. Good information.
I guess pulling the pto shaft out from the rear is not ok?

Pulling the shaft out the back is not going to tell you if the clutch plates are damaged.

Pulling the shaft out the back is not going to tell you if the clutch plates are damaged.
But the grinding is when the clutch is released, after the PTO is engaged, right?

If it were a clutch issue, would not the grinding appear when doing something else other than using the PTO?

As usual, only interested and not seeing the total picture probably...

Yep.... I did that too and found it wore the end of the engagement lever.

As Wolfman said above... pulling the shaft wont do you any good.

What pto implement are you running?

The PTO has it's own slipper clutch. Look at my thread I post posted above.

My implement is a 5 ft tiller.
I reckon I should have made sure to say it is an HST.
And yes the grinding noise only happens when the PTO lever is engaged nd then let up on the clutch pedal.
Thanks All

Gonna have to split and replace the clutch. Not a hard job. If you have the parts on hand you can do it in a weekend.

What is the difference, in this tractor, between a cam and a clutch, or better to say what are their different functions?

Selfish question here:
I am late already getiing my garden tilled up and planted.
Reckon I could get away with hooking up the tiller and till the garden?
If I am going to have to separate and repair the problem I sure would like to have my grden planted first???????????????????

L3800 HST from your other thread.

My take is that I would rent a tiller because of time. If you have to order parts to fix something it may take awhile and you could lose your window.

Not being there, I don't know the cause of the noise and would be concerned about secondary damage from a disintegrated bearing, or clutch failure.

Can you share your history of hydraulic fluid and both filter changes on this L3800HST? Fluid now at correct level? Type of fluid?

Well the best I can describe it.... in these tractors the PTO clutch is a pair of mating slipper cams.

I wouldn't chance it with the tiller. At some point the cams will completely round off.

At 100 hours I changed both filters for the hydraulics.
It does still have the original fluid in it and the level is right.
253 hours now

Update: Received an email from the contact.........they sent another download within the email response, that downloaded OK. At first glance, it appears to be a good buy for $29.00!!
