People piss and moan about the post office, but when you consider the enormous volume and wide variety of letters, magazines and packages they handle, I think the do a pretty damn good job of it.
junk mail. Reduce the garbage advertisements that 99% of people throw in the trash, and it might improve the USPS efficiency.

.... Do away with the USPS and privatize it and see reduced services and probably no service in rural areas. At a higher cost.
if you look on the post the mail box is on there is likely another box for newspapers. Somehow those get delivered...just saying...

Odds are your USPS is 'top heavy' like my CP is. Word got out, during the strike , that for every delivery person( can't call them mailmen...) there's a 'manager'....... so...if true, 1/2 the employees don't deliver the mail yet get paid far MORE than those with 'boots on the ground'.

I sell on eBay. In the last year I have shipped 536 items to domestic buyers spread across the country. I use USPS for about 90% of my items using USPS Priority Mail or 'Ground Advantage'. Of those packages sent via USPS:

  • exactly ZERO were lost.
  • One was damaged.
  • The other 10% were shipped FedEx or USPS.
  • Not one was lost or damaged.

So there are some actual facts for package shipments - might be different for First Class letters.

I would say you are very fortunate.
I buy off eBay probably 1 to 2 items a month - over the past year I have had two items that were shipped by the seller via USPS that never showed up. Sellers did ship a replacement that was eventually delivered

You left out one bullet point. How many were late (or extremely late) to be delivered to address? I've had so much trouble getting deliveries from Ebay sellers I have the phone number for the local annex supervisor to start the search.

The problem is of the magnitude the senator is sending out inquiries about USPS problems. He's had enough complaints to motivate him.

Same here..

I’ve shipped out over 350 packages by USPS since April, and only one seems to have gone MIA—and that was to FL between the last two hurricanes that just hit, so for me anyway, they’re doing pretty good with packages.

And to add, I never had any of the other 349 go past the date that eBay set for the buyer’s expected date, and thus no claims were made nor refunds needed issued. And I’m about as rural as it gets, as far as getting them picked up and on their way.

The number 1 influence on package/mail delivery from the USPS is the carrier. You have great carriers and terrible carriers. Recently there was even a carrier arrested for dumping mail because they wanted to be done for the day. I would suspect that happens more than people realize.

UPSP takes the longest to deliver a package compared to FedEx and UPS, and they refuse to bring the packages up my driveway to my house, the packages are dropped on the ground beside the mailbox regardless of the weather. FedEx and UPS both come up the driveway. When given a choice I never choose USPS.

Well that stinks. Not only does USPS come all the way up my long steep gravel driveway with oversize packages, they picked up all but 10 of those 350 packages I had that needed shipped out, from right outside my door. As for speeds, you get what you pay for, there. I used Ground Advantage and Priority Mail and the Priority Mail was better than UPS in that they also deliver and pick up on Saturday.

0.63%, according to my latest eBay report. And, I maintain 'Top-Rated' status along with 100% positiive feedback, and didn't have to do any refunds or replacement shippments. I'm sure that some of them took longer than a week, but these services (Priority Mail and Ground Advantage) don't have guaranteed delivery time.

This happened here recently in MA. Only it was an amazon van. They unloaded hundreds of packages in the woods and took off. Assumed the driver got pissed and just gave up. Kind of a scum bag thing to do.

On a positive note, I shipped a tool that I no longer used to another member in Virginia who could use the tool. I shipped it around noon on Monday from our local Post Office and he messaged me that he received the package today. Two days across country and rural Post Offices on both ends.

FedEx lost a valuable and large package of mine, which contained a piece of sheet metal for an antique car. After a lengthy discussion with a senior vice president at FedEx, the package was eventually located. I was told it would be delivered on a specific day, but it did not arrive. I emailed the VP, and he subsequently called the terminal where my package was supposed to be delivered. He spoke with the terminal manager about the situation. When the driver returned, they began to question him about why the package was marked as delivered when it wasn't received. Under pressure, he finally admitted that he had been throwing packages in a ditch. Later that night, around 11 PM, the terminal manager personally delivered my package to me. When I asked him where it had been, he simply replied, "Be happy you got your package, and don’t ask questions." I later learned from my UPS driver—who was friendly with the FedEx drivers—about what had happened.

no, He’s a U.S. postal employee, member of their union, receives their benefits. He’s paid very well and seems to enjoy the job. And I said HE doesn’t get paid to deliver those packages, no doubt the post office does.
He’s a rural carrier. The routes are evaluated periodically based on volumes during the evaluation period. As volume fluctuates the route remains the same. Whether the volume is lighter than evaluated or heavier. He may not mention the days he goes home earlier than the evaluated hours. And still gets paid the evaluation. It all equals out most of the time. Not always. But if he’s in an area of growth, his route will get reevaluated and either pay goes up or the route gets cut.

A lot of comments about negative things about the USPS, We live in the country and have for several years, and have had the same mail deliverer for many of those years. He is excellent, almost like a family member, or a close friend.

Our delivery problems are not with what/when he does, it's with the system. If he doesn't get the mail he surely can't deliver it!

The delivery problems are when there is a substitute carrier. Apparently there is a shortage of folks wanting to work at the USPS so temporaries are shifted to different routes frequently and they are not familiar with addresses. One of the temps must be dyslexic. Our box is 34225, neighbor's is 34255, and we get each others mail so frequently it's ridiculous. Only way to fix that is have someone who takes enough time to overcome her challenges!

N.Y,
I have another USPS package going to be late. Was supposed to be delivered today. I just checked and it went west when it should have gone east yesterday so it's somewhere in Massachusetts now. Seems like there's something wrong with their software that routes packages causing a lot of extra handling. Amazon has me spoiled. One of the companies I buy from often is now using Amazon for delivery instead of USPS as they used to. Separate tracking from my Amazon account but same accuracy.
