Piranha Tooth Bar - disadvantages?

So, I have read all the glowing reports for the Piranha Tooth bar, and the way I think I will be using my loader bucket, I'm pretty much convinced that it will be as good as it sounds, but... what are the disadvantages? Are there certain tasks for which it gets in the way and needs to be removed or is not ideal? Sounds like most loader bucket work where you are scraping and loading, it is the cat's meow :D. Just want to make sure I have a "fair and balanced" assessment before making the investment.

Thanks!

I have a regular tooth bar, but if I had a Piranha, I would take it off even more often. Mine is off mainly for carrying bags of cement mix or other material in the bucket. I don't trust myself to not rip open the bottom of a bag or the front of my leg.

I leave mine on all the time, if I need to remove it I will but in almost a year I have not had a reason to remove it.
Up until last week I used my bucket for taking bags of chicken feed and pine shavings to the chicken coop, never ripped a bag.
I've also hauled bags of cement, rocks, etc.
I know there have been a few members that have hit the TB with their leg, but I've been able to avoid that.

Scraping snow......

But - I use another piece of steel as an overlay - thus beating it up and not the tootbar. I can remove the entire piece of 1/2 plate in about 2 minutes.

Thanks, Gents.
- Animal feed goes in the wheelbarrow or cart, so no worries there.
- If I have a big cement job, I'll take the tooth bar off 'cuz I'm sure that would be a job for the tractor bucket.
- Not usually enough snow around here to worry about scraping, but could certainly take it off for that.
- As far as my legs go, I'll be carful... my modeling career ended a few years ago anyway...:D Besides, I could make up a really good bear or safari-related story to explain those scars.

Okay, so far nothing to really talk me out of it...

But for a 40 HP tractor no one has told me why I need one. Sounds good. Looks good.... but 70 1/4" length is $339.

I've got one like this on a tractor bucket now. I can't see the advantage of a Piranha Tooth bar enough to make me want two bars.

There's got to be some salesmen on here that convince me I can't function to the full extent of the tractor with out a Piranha, isn't there?

Never even heard of a tooth bar when I did mine. I just installed teeth but either way I could never see having one without some kind of teeth.

I've never bought a piranha bar because of scraping the hot top in winter. But I could remove it before winter I guess. BUT Hokie ....what a great idea. Thanks for sharing.

I was bouncing between the two bars as well. What sold me on Piranha was the ability to still back drag with the teeth on and get a flat surface. I am used to bolt on teeth to tip the bucket down and scratch the surface so I can dig. Then I was clearing out a field fence and the roots kept me from digging at all. To go back and forth during the day with the bolt on teeth (Singles) Vs just tipping the bucket flat I bought a Piranha. After I use it a bit I will post the difference. For now roots and small trees just will have to wait.

For some reason, I am just seeing how back dragging with a tooth bar can give you a flat surface. I've been debating on the Piranha for a few months now. I just cant seem to talk myself into it yet. I'm sure I will convince myself in the spring. I have to install 100' of culvert in an old creek bed and cover it up. I'm sure digging with the toothbar for this task will be well worth its price.

Funny, I read this thread over the weekend and while reaching to grab something by my tractor cut my ankle on the piranha bar! Only a small cut but what a coincidence.

My piranha bar stays on unless I have the snow rake installed. I don't do much dirt work so its greatest advantage for me is increasing bucket volume, albeit slightly, when doing things like moving mulch.

I don't think "safety" figures in the equation. I'd never have a trailer hitch if I considered things I bump into through my own carelessness safety hazards!

This reminds me of a funny story. Years back, the family and I were walking into a Walmart, passing all of the cars and trucks in the parking lot. My son wasn't watching where he was going, and all I could get out of my mouth was "Hitch, hitch, hitch". He ran right into the hitch with his shin, and yelled son of a .....

To this day, I still have to say hitch, hitch, hitch when we are walking through a parking lot, mostly for the entertainment value.

I love my piranha bar on my B2650. The only dis advantage I have found is when I try to just take lose dirt off the top like if you dump a pile of dirt out of a trailer and are trying to pick it up without digging into the ground it's a little difficult because the bar wants to dig and my bucket sits about 3/4 of an inch lower on the right side. The dealer said that the bucket being off was normal

No it is NOT normal for the bucket to be crooked. Number one reason is tire pressure on one of the REAR tires is off. Easiest test for that is take a tape rule and measure from the top of the rim dead center to the ground on both sides. Should be even. Add air as needed. Second reason is something in the loader frame is off. Loosening the bolts and adjusting is harder.

There are a few jobs where I need to remove my bar. Last fall, I was scooping out about 200' of ditch so I could lay tile in it. The tooth bar was great for breaking up the material, but once I got it loose, just the bucket did a much better job of cleaning out all the material for a smooth ditch. Sometime the bar is just too aggressive on a small HP tractor like a BX. I bought two budget priced box end wrenches and keep them in the tractor tool box. I can take the bar on and off in about a minute and a half.
