Varies by state I believe but usually you need a different license once you go above a certain weight. Where I live once you get above 26k combined weight ratings a license other than a standard four wheeled vehicle license is required...Unless your a farmer transporting equipment within 150 miles of your farm. My grain trucks weigh 80k when loaded with grain. 😊
Yeah, we seem to have an exemption like that too. When I looked it up, a standard license lets you drive GCM of 6,000kg, but also lets you drive an 18 ton agricultural tractor on a road, or a 25 ton GCW agricultural tractor and trailer. I guess back in the day the farm lobby was stronger than it is now. Now, the govt is passing a tax on all light vehicles that tries to make people buy electric cars. Of course, farmers aren't going to buy an electric car, useful electric trucks don't exist. They've been protesting, but the government doesn't care.

The trailer is a 20K GTWR and weighs 5500lbs so I can haul 14.5k lbs. It has a 24’ deck and 5’ beaver tail. My M5-091 with loaded tires, one set of wheel weights, 84” bucket on the front and a 84” box blade on the back weighs 12k. The truck is a 2018 Ram 3500 dually with a 5k payload and 30K trailer rating. Sorry, meant to put all that in my post.
Very nice setup. Thanks for sharing the info.

No special license needed if driving a class A style RV (30K+ weight) though!

Random non-American question. In my part of the world (NZ) you can tow up to 3,500kg (roughly 7,000lbs) behind a light truck - actually the rule is 6,000kg combined mass, but nobody checks the weight of your tow vehicle. I guess not many vehicles weigh more than 2,500kg anyway. Beyond that you need a different driving license (heavy traffic). Which most people don't bother getting, the test is reasonably onerous.

What sort of license do you need in the US to pull 30,000lbs plus weight of truck - call it nearly 40,000lbs/20,000kg/20 ton combined? Is that still a basic license, or do you need something beyond your car license?
For my State here is the breakdown:

  1. Class A — Any combination of motor vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, providing that the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. This does not include motorcycles or motor-driven cycles. (A CDL is generally required.)
  2. Class B — Any single motor vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds. This does not include motorcycles or motor-driven cycles. (A CDL is generally required.)
  3. Class C — Any motor vehicle with a GVWR of more than 16,000 pounds but less than 26,001 pounds, or any vehicle towing another with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less or any vehicle designed to carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or hazardous materials that require placarding. This does not include motorcycles or motor-driven cycles.
  4. Class D — Any motor vehicle with a GVWR of 16,000 pounds or less, except those vehicles requiring a Class A, B or C driver’s license or an L or M motorcycle license Class L — Any motor-driven cycle with less than 150cc displacement.
Yet, there are several exceptions in the law. IF you are pulling/driving anything licensed as RV plates, then you can do it with any licenses. Farmers can get a Farm CDL, which is basically CDL with some of the requirements lifted and a few restrictions put into place (basically you have to be doing stuff for your farm).

On top of that, After making multiple phone calls to our various State agencies and contacting our local State Rep., basically you can drive anything up to 26,001 lbs in any combination. I pointed out that the law says only 10,000lbs. Apparently through some type of rule making procedure they decided as long as you stay under 26,001lbs you can do whatever.

I had to get a class B because the fire engines are over 26,001lbs. Another fun fact, you can legally drive a fire engine without a driver license to an emergency with lights and sirens, but on the trip back you have to be properly license.

Anyway, properly more info than you wanted. In my case, I made sure that I got in writing what my insurance would cover me based on the DL classification I have and the vehicle/trailers we have/had. Driving without insurance and being involved in an accident could be extremely costly.

Haven't moved up to that level of RV yet! Started small many years ago with a 1984 trip down the ALCAN and the toys have been getting bigger ever since though. Sorry to stray off topic. :)

I pulled 4500kg behind my F150. and around 2700kg behind a Jeep JK Wrangler. There is no need for a different license. Behind my F250 I can tow 8000kg.

When you start pulling up in the range you are asking about you will need a CDL. They also have classes with in them.

Here is a pretty good place to what they are capable of. https://www.orangetractortalks.com/forums/threads/picture-of-your-tractor-on-your-trailer.45571/

2020 F250 with a 24’ deck over trailer, 7000lb Dexter Axels with brakes on both. Total trailer weight is about 4300lbs so that allows me about 9700lbs for towing.

Sitting on top is a Kubota L4600 with a FEL. Wanting to move up to a 65hp tractor and a 6’ no till drill which will put me right at max weight.

What is the rating on the sticker that is located on the tongue of the trailer? It should say something like 15,000 pounds. That should give you a legal payload of near 11,000 pounds. The trailer should be rated at 7,000 + 7000 + 10-15% transferred to the truck (the number on the sticker), minus the empty weight of the trailer equals your payload.

If the truck is rated that high.

Yes....nearly 15,000 lbs. total.

My 20' construction trailer with 2 - 7,000lb axles, weighs 3,400 lbs. and has a "payload" decal for 12,000 lbs.
That would be a total of 15,400 lbs, and would mean 1,400 lbs. is allotted to tongue weight.

That’s quite the juxtaposition seeing your two loaders in the same shot. Love the Farmall but sure wouldn’t want to spend all day spreading gravel with it.

Some day I need to get out our H with trip bucket loader and get a picture of it beside its Kubota garage buddy.

Nothing wrong with that setup! That's a nice trailer, not to mention the rest of the equipment! I'm looking for something larger for my lil BX with the FEL & BB on. Had the trailer before hand and it's too small.

It's neat to see how tractors have evolved through the years, but looking back on them it's just amazing to see the engineering that went into them. They are all a work of art in their own way.
