I am astonished how reporters handle their work. I've read several report and looked at pictures of this and realize reporters know very little about what they write.

Many call it an 18 wheeler. Guess it never occurred to them why 18 wheelers are called 18 wheelers.

They infer the truck was the problem and caused the death of two souls. The survivor was the driver of the vehicle that passed on the right shoulder ignoring the escorts and police.

if the driver of the car does survive, hope he's charged with murder x2 and hung before the end of the year.
saw one picture, 150 ton pipe ! wonder WHY it came off the zillion tired trailer ?

Can you imagine a load of 350,000 pounds moving at a rate of maybe 60 mph?

Newton's second law saying it best .......... Mass X Acceleration = Force , and that's a hellva lot of force!

Rather doubt the super load was doing 60 though. permit would specify speed ?

This wasnt a train - and trains do not have "cars" trying to pass them on the inside!

I cannot imagine the force of a train fully loaded , 100+ cars - makes sense it takes a long mile to stop!

I didn’t see anywhere in the link the term “18-wheeler”…. (they called it a “trailer”)…..but I wouldn’t have focused on 18-wheeler phraseology as noteworthy or objectionable in the report anyway.

For those that don't know that is a cracking unit.
It's used to make fuel from crude oil, they are incredibly expensive.

Here is the most likely scenario, that trailer is electronically and computer controlled and steers.
when the car got to close the trailers tried to move to miss the car but an object moving the opposite direction from what the computer thought most likely fowled up the whole thing.
They also move the steering on every trailer all at once and a kink in end or the middle of that trailer train is quite catastrophic to the load.

It's 100% the cars fault as there were more than likely mutiple signs and vehicles telling them not to pass.

Old trailers like this had drivers under each section steering each section, it was quite the sight.
It was also quite dangerous for the trailer drivers as people would run into them all the time, and there wasn't much crash protection to them.
Most likely that style of trailer would have had the same result

A coworker is a first responder. According to him, the car blew past the police escort and the company escort in an attempt to get around the load. They hit the truck, causing the accident.


Of course, this is just some guy's words but a load like that doesn't just fall off without an outside action to cause it to.

Those distillation columns are typically transported overland by truck or rail. There are trunnions near the front and rear to allow turning. At each trunnion, the vessel sits in a saddle and the vessel is strapped to the saddle. On the right side of GeoHorn's picture, you can see the front? trunnion, saddle, and what appears to be a broken strap. The trailers, or flat cars, between the front and rear are just spacers.

Incidentally, the tear-shaped piece near that saddle is part of the lifting trunnion used to stand the column up and place it.

Those loads have a fairly high cg. Maybe a road failure or tire failure allowed one side to drop?
