There's a John Deere 260 mower for sale locally. It's for the JD 400 series tractors, so it needs 840-850 PTO rpm depending on who you ask. Thinking 3rd gear on my l1500 will be close enough. I don't have live PTO, though. So does a RFM have too much rotating mass to run without live PTO or an over running clutch?

In reading threads from Bill Rigsby ad Dieselbob about their tillers for the same series of tractors, it looks like I will need to change the 2 lower 3ph pins and the PTO shaft. Am I missing anything else?

Finish mower doesn't have much mass, so you should be fine without an over running clutch. May have to stop longer though, just to switch directions.

You can get an over running clutch pretty reasonably. You will have to shorten your pto shafts though since it adds about 4 inches to the length of the pto stub on the tractor side.

Here's similar to the one I have on my tractor :D

I would say yes you still need an overrunning clutch or the spinning PTO on the mower can push the tractor!
besides that's a lot of reverse stress on all the parts trying to shift it under a load.

Unless one has a live PTO running anything off the PTO without an overrunning clutch is asking for trouble, don't ask me why, but the new section of the fence does look better than the rest.
Didn't have to shorten the drive shaft on my Ford 640 running a 5' shredder.

You can run plenty of PTO stuff without an over running clutch and no live PTO. Augers, open flight elevators, sickle mowers and swathers, etc. don't have enough mass to keep the PTO going. Balers and pull type combines typically have them built in. It's the stuff with lots of rotating mass where you need the over running clutch.

Agreed, I leave mine all the time, no reason to take that greasy mess off.

I texted the seller and it sounds like the gearbox needs rebuilding

I had Over Running Clutches on both my 8Ns, plus they acted as adapters for modern implements that had different size shafts. Left them on all the time. Having PTO controls on the Kubota is a dream.
