And after reading a bit more, those crops were likely worth 10x the price of replacing those trucks. Once the water recedes they can extricate the trucks and repair the levee.

It's a great solution to the immediate need to the situation,locals helping each other instead of waiting for FEMA or others to think about helping, then 4-5 months later doing next to squat.... Use what you've got to SOLVE the problem.
My Uncle Bob did the same with dozers when working on the Alaskan Highway. If you couldn't get it out in 10 minutes, it got covered over. He lost 3 and wasn't the only one.
There's far worse 'stuff' buried in landfills and who hasn't seen acres of cars in a scrapyard, rotting away on the ground ?
I hope they widen that berm x2 or x3 to prevent future breaches.

I doubt there was much contamination/leakage from the trucks, as the fuel tanks, engines, trans, axles, etc are all basically sealed compartments. Plus if they had not done that, then they would have had to deal with all the above ground fuel and oil tanks that would have been flooded down stream.
