85hokie, what you described on rerouting the crankcase vent back to the air intake is done quite frequently. On some motors it's done to keep the crankcase vent from freezing in the winter where it's run in sub zero temperatures. All that is required, is attaching a hose barb to the plumbing off the back of the air filter housing and running a new hose from the hose barb to the crankcase vent.

Deutz uses a pvc valve on there crankcase vent that works off a mild vacuum and attaches via a hose from the pvc valve to the plumbing behind the oil bath. The pvc valve on the Deutz is used to maintain a slight pressure inside the crankcase.

I think in the case of these older D650, D750, D850, D950 engines, running a crank case vent back into the air cleaner or the intake can really add up to an issue in a quick hurry, can you say run away diesel!
Yes newer engines use a PVC valve and intake routed hose, and there has been cases of those doing a nasty run away.

Is there anyway to put a filter or maybe a PCV valve on the end of that breather line?
There are systems that captured the blowby and let it push through a filter element that separated the oil (and filtered it) and let it drain back into the crankcase.

Of course it depends on how much you use it too. I had a Kohler Command that had blow by but it wasn't too bad so I just ran the tube out the back and checked the oil every time I mowed.

I am almost afraid to do that...I'm afraid of what I might find. And I really don't have $1000 to rebuild an engine. But I'm sure I'll end up finding out once curiosity gets the best of me.

$800 and a set of glow plugs, I'd put a jam tin under the breather to catch the drips and call it quits and let it run until it stops!

That's kinda the way I'm thinking. I got a quote from a local guy for $1200 to do a full rebuild. I basically bought it as a toy and to tinker with. Now I've got it running predictably so once I get that transmission pin sorted out we are gonna have some fun with it - attach my 6x12 trailer, throw some hay in there!

Finally figured out issue with the hi/lo range issue. When someone had the creeper gear setup off the transmission they didn't align the lever right when it was put back together. So lever was never engaging anything. Got it lined back up and everything works great now. There was a bunch of water in the transmission and even after draining and refilling it still has a lighter chocolate milk look to it, oh well. I accidentally pulled the strainer out trying to find another drain plug - good thing...it was 75% caked in crap.
