85hokie, what you described on rerouting the crankcase vent back to the air intake is done quite frequently. On some motors it's done to keep the crankcase vent from freezing in the winter where it's run in sub zero temperatures. All that is required, is attaching a hose barb to the plumbing off the back of the air filter housing and running a new hose from the hose barb to the crankcase vent.
Deutz uses a pvc valve on there crankcase vent that works off a mild vacuum and attaches via a hose from the pvc valve to the plumbing behind the oil bath. The pvc valve on the Deutz is used to maintain a slight pressure inside the crankcase.
