fun.. I scored THREE units for free, took 10 minutes to fix them, gave 2 away as I really, really don't 'need' THREE weedwhackers...

OK I found the problem!! It was a clogged exhaust. Cleaned it out and it runs great. Thanks for all the posts. That one really had me stumped.
Well, the bright side is you now have a spare good engine in you back pocket, that you will likely never need...:)

I assume you still have the original engine...Certainly has value for resale...

I had what you describe with my stihl 170 chainsaw. I use their oil and 91 alcohol free gas. Finally took the arrestor out after cleaning several times and it runs great again without it.

I bought a FS44 Stihl about 20 years ago and it plugged up the exhaust in a few years using Stihl oil. I have been using Ace hardware oil in my chainsaws with no issues, so I switched to that for the trimmer using the same fuel can. Just this year, I pulled the exhaust apart to check on things and it was fine. I suspect that the Ace and Stihl oils are both made by Castrol and may be the same now. Years ago, the Ace oil did change in appearance and maybe both are now better.

Here is a
about the problem with Stihl oil.
