Finally getting around to a follow-up. The cylinders were rebuilt a couple of weeks ago, but then I had to turn my attention to wiring issues before putting it all back together. Got all that done well enough, put it back together and said a little prayer before trying to start it. Something worked, because she fired right up and the FEL started working properly after a few seconds. I haven't really put it to work under load, but as of now, no leaks and all appears to be working right.
My big mistake:
--- Not chamfering the lead edges of the piston rods before reassembling, causing me to ruin one seal. Adding insult to injury, I ordered two replacements, only to find out that I ID'd the part wrong. When I went to order the right part, found it was NLA, unless ordered in kit form. Once the ordered kits arrived, about a month had passed from my screw-up. I deserved that. At the same time that I ordered the kit, I did find one location that had the seal I needed in their obsolete bin in the back, so I ordered that as well. It arrived, and was appreciated, but the sad fact of the matter is that it was old enough that even out of the bag, there was a split in part of the rubber.
Probably couldn't have done this without the shop press. Overall, boneheaded moves aside, the job wasn't hard to do given proper or acceptable tooling. The FEL manual I was pointed to in this thread was a great help. Of all the cylinder rebuild vids & threads I looked at, none dealt with V-packing and how to install/tighten them. I wouldn't have guessed the procedure on my own to install and then tighten the packing.
Thanks again to everyone who helped here.
