Microwave oven

My microwave quit working. Went blank when the cooking cycle was done. I put a new fuse in it. After 1 2 minute cycle and 1 1 minute cycle the new fuse blew. Is there anything I should try before I scrap the microwave?

hmm, have you cleaned the top of the chamber real good ?

You can check the voltage in your outlet. Sometimes in hot weather with peak demands voltage drops causing higher amp draw on appliances.

I'd check the capacitor. Thats a cheap fix.
if it's the Magnatron, it's probably best to scrap it.

little niggling things can blow a fuse also... like a short in the wiring/door switch or the board.

if you scrap it, save the transformer.... you can use it to make a nifty wood burner...

If you scrap it…. DIS assemble it and take the MAGNET out of the magnetron. It’s one of the most powerful ones you can get….and is useful for holding notes and such to the beer-refrigerator in the shop.

(I once found a roasted wasp in a magnetron that was blowing the fuse. The cooling FAN in the microwave might also be the culprit…. If the fan quits…the unit will overheat… and blow fuses.

CAUTION: Do not work on an opened-microwave. The radiation from the unshielded magnetron can permanently BLIND you. It really Will Cook-your-eyeballs and other “participles and leticibles” (shades of Brother Dave Gardner for those with long memories.)

I don't know if it's worth working on although cleaning it with compressed air might be worth a try based on the @GeoHorn post.

Thinking I'll scrap it. It's a 2010 MC appliance model. Only reason I want to keep it is that it will need new braketry. It's a shame that there isn't an industry standard for over the stove mount microwaves.

I replaced my '96 Frigidaire with a new GE last year. Although the bracket looked completely different, the GE worked with the old one. Good luck.

When you buy your new one, open the box and check it for damage. They are very fragile, and if they are dropped, they can damage the case, but there will be no damage to the box. I just had this happen to me last week. They delivered the appliances for the new house, and when they cut the bottom of the microwave box and lifted the top, one corner of it was crushed. Today, microwaves can do most of what an oven can.

They cannot heat your kitchen as you cook your Sunday meal. A real oven can.
