Major road work!

Not a project, because I had someone do the work. I've mentioned it before, but my road suddenly got a lot worse during the snow & rain in january:

I was planning on dealing with it this summer, but this couldn't wait. It was also getting hollowed out underneath along that pipe.

A couple weeks and several thousand dollars later, I think I won't have to worry for a while:

Nice work! Riprap around the culvert outlet will help erosion tremendously.

Looks like your new culvert is a wee bit bigger than the old one water was running around (and rightly so). Whoever did it, pretty job.

Looks good. The RCP appears to be 18 inches, I'd suggest adding two precast headwalls and larger riprap on the downstream side.

The original pipe was somewhere around 18". Water was running over the road at least a foot deep when Matthew hit us. Had a couple other storms where similar happened but not quite as bad. The old pipe just didn't have the capacity.

I don't think that's going to be a problem now.

Thanks for the additional tips, I'll check that all out in a few months, when I recover from the hit!

Curious, that's pretty much a required step up here or your rock will just sink when spring thaw hits.

There isn't any on my road anywhere, so I would guess it's not a major issue.

I don't know what your frost line is (since you mention spring thaw) but I don't think it's relevant in this case: they went all the way down below the current river bed and rebuilt it from there. Not sure where the fabric would have gone.

What you describe isn't an issue I've seen happen anywhere on the road, so I'm guessing it's not an issue.

Yea you're in NC so not much of a frost / deep freeze issue.

I'm assuming you upsized the cuvert when replaced?

County minimum where I lived was 18". That being said, we were in a low spot and the ditches handled the runoff from the surrounding area.

So where 18" was perfect in most of the area. Two of us had 36" culverts, the down stream from. Us was 2- 24" culverts on the next drive.

Then the county i their infinite wisdom put in an 18" culvert below that drive way

Needless to say every gully washer that came threw caused the 18" culvert to back up and our driveways to flood.

After some serious complaining and then the residents on the street threatening to start billing the county for repairs, they finally came out and replace the 18" culvert....... with a single 24" culvert.

Road still flooded on occasion, but at least it wasn't every single heavy storm.

Someday they might get a clue and match the rest of the street.

Almost certain they did not.

A lot depends on the base material.
I had my 2,200 driveway dug out to 3' deep, and back filled with pit run gravel.
Top was 6" of crushed 1-1/2" minus, plus 3 inches of of 3/4" minus.
Worked out well and lasted for the 13 years I lived there .
Minimum Winter temp was 5 degrees.
I graded it with a meaningful crown twice each year.

May not be easy to see in the pics - replaced the original 18" with a 48". I think we'll be ok
