looking for an idea of what I'm getting into fixing this 4 speed transmission. It's the mechanical 4 speed with high/low lever down low on the left and fwd/neutral/reverse lever up by the steering wheel

2nd gear in both high and low the shift knob started wobbling back and forth. So I though the thrust bearing was going out and used 1st high and went slower, well now both 1st and 2nd are out so I think it wiped out the whole cluster. It went bang - crunch griind and took me a bit to get it out of that mess and over to the 3-4 gear cluster.

I continued in 3-4 and got done with the planting so now I've got some time to get in there, which I'll do soon.

792 hours, was due for service @ 800hrs. Check the oil before and after the blow up and it's good, topped off and smells and looks fresh.

Also, while you're all looking at this maybe someone can point me to a fantastic new seat :p Mine is shot, I'd like a good replacement better than OEM which I never liked from day 1

See this reply on TBN.
Back in 2001 there was a TBN post about M6800's popping out of 2nd gear. Kubota ended up doing a mainshaft redesign. This failure could be related - there might even be a slim chance of getting some factory help, especially with so few hours on it. Good luck. Dick B

Thanks rbargeron,

Decided to haul it into the local dealer after talking to the head mechanic. He said it would be 1hr labor to take the top off the transmission, have a look and go from there. Said the tractor needs split for repair no way around that and he's sure the synchro's are shot from my description of the events.

said $7-800 bucks for splitting and putting back. Then the trans parts/labor on top of that. Wouldn't quote me a cost for trans rebuild but I did hit him up kind of early it's going to take some digging to sort out all the parts and such.

He said not likely to be done for $2k, I'm hoping for 3k or so

I've done it all before but I don't have the setup for a split job on this size of tractor, I'd want a gantry or something better than a couple floor jacks.
