Time to get things ready for the summer and noticed my gearbox is loose. I need to tighten the 4 bolts up. Looks like I need to take the stump jump off but I’ll be darned if I can find the size of the socket I need to take that bolt off.

Hold a tape measure to it. Or slide calipers. Or, if you dont mind half-assing it to get it done in a hurry, just stick a pipe wrench on it and smack that with a hammer. But im guessing you own a tape measure so that wont be necessary 😂

I have never taken a stump jumper off, and never tightened the gear box;

If I remember correctly there is supposed to be a hole to access the bolt/s that hold it on from the top for the blades, but here's a video that kind of explains removing it. Its about the 2 minute mark. (and it don't sound fun)

Looks like there were 2 different gearboxes used. One is M24 and other is showing 1” or 1 1/4” for the nut. The 14 could be the pitch though. Good luck.

Those look like thread measurements. 24mm is slightly thinner than 1”.

Some tow balls have a 1” 14tpi shank, and use a 1-1/2” nut. If that happens to be the size you need you might be in luck because all kinds of places sell ‘tow ball wrenches’ for $8-15. Harbor Freight, Walmart, Autozone, etc etc. Its just a huge double box end wrench with 1-1/8 and 1-1/2 ends. If it fits put it on there and smack the end of it with a 3-4lb hand sledge, or put a big cheater pipe on it, and you might be in business. Of course 1-1/2” sockets do exist but they’d often be in 3/4” drive size and not many people have 3/4” drive tools. You can get an adapter but a lot of 1/2” drive anvils will snap before they move a rusty 1-1/2” nut. I would only use a 1/2” impact on a nut that size, not a 1/2” ratchet or breaker bar. 🤷‍♂️

I think you may be right. Those are the thread measurements. If so, the OP should get about a 32-36mm and the inch equivalent and go from there.

@DonDon go to harbor freight or the equivalent, buy a handful of large sockets, return the ones that don’t fit.
