L5450

My 2001 L5450 recently acquired a new "issue". I've noticed while using this machine that the RPMs will not go above 2k and now the lights are flickering. I've visually checked the grounds and fuses. None of which looked burned or even misshapen from heat. All the contact points have been cleaned and I even added dielectric grease to all the contact points. Starter wire is tight with a good clean contacts.

What I've done:

Checked voltage
Checked all grounds/fuses (cleaned and greased)
12v source cables (cleaned and greased)
Pulled dash checked wires for cracks/breaks/chaffs shorts


Not done:

checked anything mechanical (I don't know what to check for this)
tested the ignition switch itself-I just thought of that.
voltage drop


Any help would be greatly appreciated

What was the normal high end RPM?

I would check fuel / filter for that problem - could be a mechanical pump issue too.

On the lights flickering,
test voltage at battery - engine off. THEN start and run, check voltage again ....then run up rpms and check again. SEE if voltage has increased when running. Could the lights be a vibration problem, what appears as flickering, caused by movement of the lens?

The flickering may not be related to low max speed.
First and most important check engine oil level.

Once a L5450 starts it doesn't need electricity to keep going - just uses 12v for lights, alternator, etc. Does it start and idle ok? If it won't gain rpm to approx 2600 rpm the reason is likely mechanical. Loader work ok? Is it making any new sounds? Does it act like it's laboring under load? Are the hydraulics connected normally? Shuttle working ok?

While it's idling, try turning the key to off. One indicator of hydraulic resistance is if the engine stops almost instantly. On some tractors the three-point lever's high position keeps calling for power, which loads the pump and engine. Lowering the lever a bit relieves it.

All the hydraulic functions seem to operate normally, haven't noticed any out of the ordinary laboring. I will check for hydraulic resistance and get back.
