I had to make the choice between the L3800 and the L4600. After looking at all the specs and prices and listening to my better half I decided on the L4600 4x4 with LA764 loader, 2 sets of wheel weights, rear work light and a set of hyd remotes and a set of forks. The dealer had to order a couple things and I was out of town for a while, but it's finally here. First job was to pick up a big bale, mine weigh about 1100 plus or minus. The loader picked it up with no trouble, but was a little light in the rear so I put on my box scrape. That helped some but I think another set of weights or some fluid might be in order. I then cleaned out some lumber left over from a construction job. I loaded 24 sheets of half inch plywood, I figure according to google, 53lbs each around 1200lbs and then added 8 rubber horse matts at probably 50lbs each, total 1600? It picked it up but barely then the back wheel came of the ground and promptly dumped the horse matts on the ground. I know that's a lot and it's a long way in front of the tractor, but I had to check it out. Very happy with the loader, still going to add more weight for safety factor, very happy with the shuttle shift.

Very Nice! Great choice, especially the DT part! :D

I probably would have got a L4600DT, but my dealer didn't have them yet and I got too good a deal on the L3800DT to pass. I'm still impressed with the little rig!!!

You want at least 1000 lbs on the 3 pt hitch for any loader work. Loaded tires and wheel weights are great, but Do Not take the place of Counter Weight for loader work! I learned this the hard way with our old L3750, we killed the front end...

Congrats on the new tractor. I would suggest, however, either adding more rear ballast or taking smaller "bites" with the loader even at the expense of having making an extra trip or two. It might save you and/or your tractor some damage.

Your box blade looks like it probably weights 500 - 600 pounds. You need at least 1,000 pounds or more back there if you are going to try to max out your loader.

If your tires are not loaded, then I would start there by getting them loaded.

Congrats on the new machine! I got the same setup as you a few months ago, excepting I have R4s and a top for shade. I love this tractor so far !

Thanks, I really am satisfied with it with the limited use Ive been able to do. The weather here has been very wet and raining so I havent done too much yet, just some pasture mowing and put out some rye grass.

Hey Jim, I saw you had some Allis machines; my best friend and myself have been restoring and farming with Allis gear for decades. We used to have a WD-45 years ago, but only have a C, CA and D17 right now. The CA is still set up with the planters and side-dress assmbly. We still put in corn and peas with it. Actually looking at a AC-5050 right now too.

Oh, BTW I made one small addition to my L4600 a few weeks ago, I purchased the right-side hand and put it on the fender. I didnt put it there to get on the tractor (I realize its not a good idea to mount the tractor on that side do to the FEL controls) But I just like having a handle on both sides when Im in the seat working.

Not to Hi-Jack the thread but TexasBoy what canopy do you have on your tractor. Ive been looking around for one on my L3800 but wanted a metal one. So instead of shattering or cracking like plastic I could just hammer it back in place.

I sure dont want to hijack this fellas thread either! I called my dealer and he said that top is a Kubota part. If you need a part number send a PM and I will get back to you on it.

TexasBoy,
I really like your tractor pics and that other hand hold looks like something I'd like to do also. I really like my Allis Chalmers also, I've had my 45 for about 10 years, it has factory power steering. I traded in my 200 allis for the Kubota, and I still have the WD 40. I always thought a CA would be a sweet little tractor for a belly mower. No need to worry about Hi-jacking a thread, just wanted to spark some conversation anyway. Post some picks of your other tractors.
Thanks all - for the comments on the counter weight. I'm thinking about windshield washer fluid in the tires, cheap and less corrosive anyone have thoughts on that?

#1: Your too far north, it could still freeze, as the alcohol content will evaporate in time.
#2: It's not that cheap when you need quite a few gallons of it to fill your tires.
#3 It's not heavy enough to be properly effective, beet juice or "Rim Guard" is the best bet over Calcium chloride.

Wolfman,
I will look into the rim guard, I would guess it's not corrosive? I've heard of the beet juice, no experience with it. Someone suggested windshield washer fluid, never heard of using it, from what you're telling me that's not a good idea. I appreciate the feed back. I wouldn't mind another set of weights, but I don't think 150 pounds will give me what I need. I have had calcium before and it's still in my WD-45 and my WD-40 CORROSIVE.

I use magnesium chloride in my tires on my equipment, just as heavy, and in tubes is safe on the rims and tires, and it's safer for the ground and pets if it leaks too.

Beet juice or Brand Name of "Rim Guard" Is the "safer" option and says it is less corrosive to the rims, but like any product that you could put in it will rust out the rims eventually if you don't put it in tubes.

I would go beet juice or "Rim Guard" but you just cant get it anywhere close to here. I think the closest dealer is 200 miles away (400 round trip) from me, not worth it!

Another option is RV (not automotive) Antifreeze, but it's not as heavy and it's not cheap.

IDKUBOTA,
Thanks, I never thought to ask them, I looked up dealers and they were not on the list.
If I could just pull over a deicing truck in CDA I could get it from them too.:D

TexasBoy,
I had the dealer add 1 set of rear remotes and a rear work light. If you add anything else to your tractor I'm always looking for good ideas. Planning on replacing the tool box with a bigger one, I don't know what they were thinking when they put that little plastic one on. I also might add some lights to illuminate the loader bucket better at night. They have some really good light ideas and pics on here. Do you have a part # for that hand hold?…Jim

Great suggestions. I actually am in the process of taking the stock tool box off (remove the brackets too) and Im gonna fab up some new brackets from flat-strap steel and relocate a toolbox in a better spot right behind the seat, tucked out of the way. It will look like an OEM install once Im done. :)

The hand grab is: # T1060-29450

The nuts are: # 02771-50100

Just got clarification on the top, it is made by Wells Ag Company.

Hope that helps!

That looks like a nice installation and thanks for the part numbers. When it warms up (been hanging between 0-15 deg) I will add some rubber floor mats. Doing chores and stuff that floor board gets pretty slick with snow and ice. Slipped ounce and looked at that hand rail that's not there….I will order one soon.
