Update: I can’t believe it’s been 2 months. My goodness time flies. Got my kiddo married off and life settled down a bit so I came back out to check on the Cheeto.

When we left off I was trying to figure out an approach to fix the worn axle boss

I finally decided on getting a pipe weld grinder attachment ($80) and mig welding it up, as @North Idaho Wolfman and I had discussed. Honestly, I was pretty worried about messing this thing up.

I started out laying down some short beads on the top half, staying away from the edges so I could use those as a guide. I’m clearly not a professional welder, so I’m happy to laugh at these with you. 🤣

From there it was a matter of grinding down, filling in some holes, some more grinding, etc…about 3 iterations.

Until finally we were about at the diameter I needed.

It turned out a lot better than i thought it was going to, for sure. I missed the diameter by about .015 on the small side, so I’ll probably hit it with JB weld and form it with the bushing so everything is nice and tight. Glad that is done. have to do the other side tomorrow.

Thank you sir. Appreciate your help as always. That pipe grinder is awesome. Well worth the $ and I don’t think it would look like it does if I’d used a flap disk.
I just added one to my amazon cart. Looks like a great tool.

UPDATE: Well gents. I can’t believe it’s been almost six months. As a quick update, I did finish the front axle and got it remounted. I had a machine shop cut out the old bushings for me for like $20, so that wasn’t bad.

I do still have a hydraulic leak under the 4wd drive shaft housing tho. Even with a new seal. Will investigate that more later. But with my bobcat in the shop at the moment I needed to put this ol girl in service feeding hay.

Since I started this I knew I’d want to put a SSQA on the tractor to use some of the lighter SS attachments like the forks, hay spear and trailer hitch, so this past weekend I set out to make that happen.

A retail SSQA runs about $1300 shipped and without a 3rd function or a good idea how the tractor would handle the attachments I decided to break out the plasma and do some cheaper weld-ons for now.

So my plan was to use the plasma and a flush cut cartridge to cut the bracket off the factory bucket. This was the first time I’d used the flush cut cartridge but wow it’s awesome.

Super quick and clean cuts with minimal grinding to be done on the bucket before adding the SSQA plate.

After tacking a couple of pieces on to hold the outside brackets I got them lined up and welded onto the QA plates.

it mounted back up great. I left the middle support on and will be adding a plate between the two QA’s just for some stability but for now, this will do to get the cows fed.

and viola, happy cows!

I read the first, 15th and 16th pages of this thread. Wow, I am impressed!!! What a job bringing it back to life. And here I was grunting about the little bit of work I had to do to mine. lol

When I get time I'm gonna read the middle 13!

Thanks Mdstihl. It’s been quite the journey for sure. Best thing about the process was all of the incredibly kind and helpful people on here walking through it with me.
