The last adjustment you are referring to is an idle adjustment. It helps to take out any governor hunting. The maximum fuel adjustment is on the front of the pump and controls the maximum fuel delivery. By backing it out you will increase the fuel by allowing the fuel rack to travel farther. There is not a lot of room for improvement with these engines but if smoke is what you are after you can back it out about 3 turns and enjoy the smog.:D

OK, stupid question time. Why do you want it to smoke? When you get that black smoke, all you are doing is injecting more fuel into the cylinder than you have oxygen available to burn leading to incomplete combustion. I am no diesel expert by any stretch of the imagination, but that seems to be just a waste of fuel to me. Correct me if I am wrong. If you just have to turn that adjustment out, I would go to the point where you just begin to see hints of black smoke under heavy load and stop there.

Alot of the problem with getting any smoke out of a diesel now is this sorry fuel we have now. I had some of the old 2000 ppm high sulfer fuel and my 9000 would puff a nice little stream of black smoke under a load. Now on this new fuel it's hard to even see smoke no matter how hard of a pull I put it in.
