Hello all,

I am very new to tractors and have very little knowledge about them. About a month ago I bought a 1975 L225 2wd Kubota. The hour meter on the tractor said 300 hours but the previous owner said the cable had been broken for a time and the tractor actually had a little over 1000 hours use. I have been bush hogging a hill with some small trees and doing some light driveway work with a 4' grader. The tractor seems to have plenty of power and works well. I got off of the tractor yesterday to move a limb and noticed the crankcase vent was blowing a little smoke. The smoke seemed to be consistent. Today I noticed there was a couple of drops of oil in the garage under the vent. I'm sure its blow-by. Is this something that needs immediate attention. Otherwise the tractor is in great shape. It is not very noticeable but I don't want it to cause any further damage. Is this something I should let go until I notice some significant oil usage or should I be more proactive and fix it now? Does this usually remain stable for a long time or, if left untreated, compound problems later. I would like this tractor to last. I will probably use the tractor less than 75 hours a year. Lastly, are the parts to overhaul this engine still available and from where. Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have a B6100E that has so much blow-by that when I back up to a building to hook my irrigation pump to the stinger to move it, I have to hold my breath if the wind isn't blowing. It starts, runs and does what I need it to. I've worked it hard mowing and it doesn't overheat. It doesn't use much oil. You can buy a lot of oil for the price a set of rings.

Is the drop of oil from the breather black like diesel oil or is it chocolate colored?
It sounds like normal blowby unless the oil drip is greeny/chocolate colored. If it was leaking anti-freeze your blow by would be a lot worse than it sounds.:D

My B5100E has some blow by and an occasional drip, With a simple system like a road draft tube it is not unreasonable to think that after an engine acquires hours on it that some base compression and even an occasional drip will occur. Aside from the nuisance of the drip on the floor I do not see it as a big deal on an older tractor as long as you keep an eye on the oil level.

A solution to eliminating the drip could be as easy as rerouting the draft tube and feeding it into the intake and putting a PCV valve in line, I am actually considering doing this just to eliminate the ocasional drip on my barn floor.

Possibly but there are literally tens of millions of internal combustion engines running around out there with this identical setup

Oil drip looks just like oil on dipstick. Coolant is bright green. Oil was changed last october. The oil does look black and a little thin. Previous owner said that because it was a adiesel the oil looks like that shortly after every oil change. Is that true? He said he uses 15w40.

Yep these old tech engines turn the oil black before you can back out of the shop. Your engine sounds like it is just fine.:D
