Hello! I am new to this forum, never having owned a Kubota tractor before. I recently came into a L170 tractor with a loader. It seems like a good little tractor for what I need. It did come with some problems however. The previous owner paid a local dealership to rebuild the motor, however they broke the front crankshaft pulley and discarded the pieces and "lost" the alternator and when he finally got the tractor back it was making a racket when he tried to turn it over. It has never ran since.

I am working on getting it running and need some assistance if anyone can help.

1) The starter is not fully engaging the ring gear on the flywheel. It sometimes will grab, but will mostly just spin freely. The front 1/16" of the ring gear is chewed up. When I measure from the face of the starter flange to the end of the starter bendix gear travel and compare it to the depth in the bellhousing from the flange to the ring gear, the bendix gear falls short and barely engages. With the bit of damage to the ring gear the starter is not driving the flywheel. Is this a common occurrence? I have never seen a starter in anything with such a shallow gear mesh. I am wondering if it has the correct starter. There is no part number on the starter. If anyone has any experience with this problem I would love to hear it!

2) I will get another crank pulley machined, however I would like to know the diameter of the original. If someone could kindly measure the diameter of the pulley on their L170 it would be very helpful.

Thanks you!

Im just guessing here, but it seems to me, was not a kubota dealer.
Just wondering if the flywheel/ clutch assy was reassembled incorrectly.
Hope it all works out for you.
Im sure someone will chime in with some workshop manual info.

Thanks for replying.
It actually was a Kubota dealer, believe it or not. They also sell other brands such as JD. There was something to the story also about firing the mechanic. He took the motor with him when he was fired which may have been part of the problem. The seller did receive all of the old rings and bearings in the Kubota boxes so there seems to be some truth to it.

I do have the shop manual, but have not pulled the engine yet to take a look at the flywheel. I would imagine the ring gear can be removed and turned around. I haven't seen anything in the shop manual that would explain how the flywheel could be located too far away from the engine, but the pictures are not very clear.

If that was me when i sent it to the dealer, they would have been making it right before i took it back. Is it a l175 that you have?

I have flipped ring gears on manual transmission vehicles, good possibilty it can be done. Would only make sense. Does seem like you got a pretty good handle on it already.there are sources for some parts, a few searches will reveal the vendors for used parts. Or tractor wreckers.

Post a picture of the starter, either it's the wrong one or something is not letting the bendix run out all the way.
P/N 15221-63014

You can buy a new ring gear for about $115 for it, I would do that instead of flipping it around.
P/N 15221-63823

The front pulley is P/N 15221-74283

Another option is West Kentucky tractor parts

They have quite a few parts.

Re: L175 Help or advise Please!

Thanks for all of the help. I will post a picture of the starter. When I measured the engagement depth, I used the shaft stop at the end of the starter nosecone - assuming that would be the extent of the bendix travel.

BTW. I made an error in my original post. It is a L175 not L170.
