I have that lever on my L1501, it's an extra hi/low range. They call it a creeper gear. You can gear the tractor down where it's super slow

As darren mentioned,i also have that lever. Gives an extra low range. The housing below lever should have H and L cast into it.

If you look real close at the housing, you can see the lever is in H, in the photo.
Shift both other levers to N, and you should be able to easily shift it to L. On my L12202, I have an aux transmission by my left elbow, that has 4 speeds on it. If you are in 1, you can get off the tractor, and go get a cup of coffee, drink it, come back and the tractor may have moved 20 feet, or so!:D

Just to clarify, this lever is in addition to the Hi/Lo lever below the left seat? I have owned and seen many 245s and never came across this feature.

Yes,lever by seat in low, transmission in low range reverse ,i step off and look around while backing up a trailer. It moves very very slow. Handy.

It was a creeper function for rice patty work and some US models were equipped with it for trenching work. ;)
That's is why it is more common to see it on Grey/Gray market tractors.

That is very interesting. Not to be critical, but what would you actually ues this lever for? I would not think the manufacturer would design so you could get on and off a moving tractor! I will admit I too dismount from mine in Lo 1st when laying plastic or cultivating and pick up a rock too big to pulverize but any slower than that just seems as if you would place in neutral and restart.

lot of useful usages of the creeping gears,
you can read this old post here
you can use all the power of your engine at the tires and the pto...
