The most likely scenario is that the key was worn, and that is why it broke. Removing the key as described, and getting a new key will rectify the problem with the least amount of expense. If he is to take the cylinder out, just taping the edge of the switch against a firm object such as the edge of a vise, the broken part will most likely just fall out. The cost of a locksmith will far exceed the cost of a new key, and/or the cost of a new switch.

My experience with locksmiths is that they are reasonably priced.

I wouldn't have used fluid film. Was always taught to just use graphite. The fluid could attract dirt and eventually you might have issues with that lock.

The keys are universal - all you have to do is get the broken off stub out.
