My experience with locksmiths is that they are reasonably priced.The most likely scenario is that the key was worn, and that is why it broke. Removing the key as described, and getting a new key will rectify the problem with the least amount of expense. If he is to take the cylinder out, just taping the edge of the switch against a firm object such as the edge of a vise, the broken part will most likely just fall out. The cost of a locksmith will far exceed the cost of a new key, and/or the cost of a new switch.
