Hi there. new to the group and new to the tractor world. I have had a 1994 (I think) b4200 for a few years now and it has run flawlessly. Keep fuel in and no issues. However this spring while moving fill the hydraulics started to 'squeal' on me. I was done for the day anyways so kind of forgot about it until the next time I went to use it. The squeal started again. i noticed that I had bumped the 'lift' lever to the right of the seat and pulled it all the way back. It was good for a while longer then started again. I don't have a manual so started trouble shooting what I could to no avail. I was on the tractor again and it did it again yesterday and unless I hold the lift lever by hand it squeals and the hydraulics don't work. I checked the small dipstick under the seat and it had virtually no oil on it. I assume this is bad. I then checked the small plastics cap reservoir (at least I think that is what it is) on the hydraulic line to the right of the shifter and noticed it looked low as well. Also assume this is bad. I have never noticed a leak of any sort but this doesn't seem right to me. Any ideas of what I should check or add? Is the only place to add fluid to the system to the right of the shifter where the plastic cap is? Thanks in advance!

Correct the oil level but your "squeal" is probably unrelated.

Thanks Dan, Do you fill through the dipstick as well as the small reservoir? or just one of the ports? The squeal is only there when the left lever is engaged and the hydraulics are in operation. otherwise it is quiet.

I dint know much about your tractor but you fill through the opening with the cap.

It sounds like the squeal may be the pressure relief valve in the hydraulic system. We can work on that.

Does the lever hold it's place in both directions when moved?

Check that this Feed Back / Cancel linkage is moving freely, if it sticks or binds it will cause issues.

Yes the fill port is to the right of the shifter, you WILL NOT see fluid here, only fill to the level on the dip stick.

OK - I filled and checked the dipstick. Took a lot of fluid to see any show up on the stick. Seems like it was a really low - Damn. I did notice that at one point after running the engine there was fluid leaking out of the shifter boot - not sure what this is about? I also saw there was fluid around the 3 point hitch linkage after filling where it was previous dry, but couldn't see where it was coming from.

The linkage holds in the forward position and seems to move freely. It also holds in the rear or engaged 'lift' position as well but then as said before 'squeals' and the noise appears to be coming from up front some where.

Open to suggestions on where to go from here.

Adjust the feedback rod NIWM illustrated.
  1. With engine running raise hitch to top.
  2. Loosen lock screw on the rod and adjust length until squeal stops.
