Hello there!
So as per the title I will explain the stupidity that has happened. We had a guy doing demo in a building taking block walls down with a buster on my Kubota KX008-3 excavator with a D722 engine. Long story short operator error caused the guy to tip the machine completely on its side. To make matters worse it did not shut off and the operator left it running on its side for roughly 2-4 minutes before getting it upright again. The machine was shut down after because the operator complained about “poor performance” afterwards. Well I looked at it the next day and immediately upon starting it, it non stop rough idles and blows a very thick white-ish smoke out of the exhaust. Coolant level is good doesn’t bubble in the coolant bottle but I am at a loss. Is there something that would be likely to happen to cause that smoke after running on its side? Also to be sure I am including all the information the same guy was caught draining the fuel tank on the ground. When asked what the Fu#% he was doing he fessed up and said he accidentally put gasoline in instead of diesel. Since I was not there at the time another guy said he made sure to drain it completely. The tipping incident happened the same day. I’m sure this sounds like a stupid question, I hope I am posting in the correct space I just figured I would give this a try. A side note that “operator” has since been fired seeing that he completely failed on the smallest cheapest machine we own and was absolutely not worth the risk. Any information someone could possibly provide would be greatly greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, if it was running tipped over for a period of time Plus had gasoline in it, then your engine is probably ruined. On its side and running means that it was not getting lubricated properly which causes all kinds of damage to bearings and pistons. Gasoline in diesel engines causes damage to the fuel system and pistons. Those 2 things together means that you are most likely looking at a complete rebuild or replacement engine. I would seriously consider putting in an insurance claim if you have it on the machine and get it fixed up properly.

gas isn't helping matters any

usually when they're tumped over, oil gets drawn into the intake and bends rods.

flush the fuel system and start there. Expect to have to go into the engine though.

When a machine is laid on its side a few things to keep in mind and teach your employees. Turn the engine off ASAP. When machine is set upright let it set for a while (preferably overnight) then remove the glow plugs and turn engine over by hand (wrench on crankshaft). If engine turns over by hand use starter to turn over for 15-20 seconds at a time with 20-30 seconds of rest for the starter. This will keep the starter from overheating. After clearing any fluid on the piston tops install the GPs and it should be ok. If engine is turned over with fluid in the cylinders you can bend a rod and the engine will not run smoothly.

In my experience, the minute bit of gas left after draining it (if numbskull did a proper job draining) won't hurt anything.
Question is- did he try to run it for long with gas?
Either way, that's not likely the problem. Unfortunately I believe it's worse. Running while asking for a belly rub usually means oil was ingested. That leads to bent or broken con rods. The white smoke you see from the exhaust is probably raw diesel fuel that didn't ignite in the cylinder that has the bent rod.

You might want to fire the idiot that hired this guy as well, so the next guy hired, won,t cause you so much pain, and grief, as well. It,s going to be a very costly mistake. Common sense doesnt seem to be so common, any more.

Good thing you didn't let numb nut crack addict run your 12" power feed wood chipper. Probably wishing you had....
Lmfao yeah well I’m thinking I should have started him with a shovel. Then again that probably would have ended bad somehow. Some people are just more suited to jobs that require touching shit with your hands and not running thousand + pound machinery. Lesson learned expensively I guess

Turn the engine by hand and see if all the pistons come up to the same height.
If they don't then you have a bent rod.

I was just going to post, unfortunately I did a little bit ago crank it by hand and behold cylinder 1 is significantly lower and stiff also. When I got the cylinder to go down I saw scarring along the walls. So I guess that answers my question. I posted here first since I have never experienced a machine roll and stay running like this before. One time only in a different situation something like this happened but removing the plugs and cranking it solved the problem. I figured maybe there was something simple that I could try to fix the rough idle/smoke. Clearly not I will be rebuilding this engine now. All because of a loser 23 year old know it all. Lesson learned.. very very costly time consuming lesson lol I really appreciate all the responses I have gotten from everyone.

Ouch, good rebuild and your good to go.
Just be happy it wasn't an emissions unit, one of those would run you 10K plus to fix one of those in the event of a roll / tip over.

I am surprised that these machines don't have a safety cut-off switch that will shut down the engine when they approach an angle that the machine will no doubt go over.

True, but many of these machines don’t have shut-offs for low oil, overheating or many more common maladies.

Maybe his excavator does for those I mentioned, just know some don’t.

Don’t disagree in ideal world, but more sensors = more production $$, and more issues when they malfunction.

Sad that common sense is lacking, and due diligence of owners (or operators in this case) is non-existent.
