Well, the oil filter on my 5.0 F150 installs horizontally on the front of the engine so I don't have any options. I will likely continue to prefill the oil filter on my tractor, mainly out of habit. Cant wait for @North Idaho Wolfman to comment on both prefilling the diesel fuel filter and the ether bunny... Very informative and entertaining video!

Now IF you want to see a REAL test, find The tests Tom McCahill did for Mechanix Illustrated in the late 50's/ early '60s. From what I recall 3 same cars,1,000s of miles, #1..add oil, no filter changes #2, add oil, change filter, #3 change oil, change filter. THOSE results WILL surprise you !!!

Yep. The MX and the M oil filters both have an horizontal orientation. My Jeep TJ is the same way but I always prefill the oil filter on the F250 because it mounts vertically to the underside of the engine.

Fun fact, the LX2610 oil filter is also mounted horizontally, so disregard my previous statement. Clearly, my mind has regressed over the past few years . I do miss the '97 TJ that I had though... On my wife's 2018 JL 3.6, the filter housing/element actually sits vertically on the top of the engine. I cannot say for certain that this is why she needed new camshafts, rockers, and lifters at ~100k miles, but I am fairly certain that it contributed...

heck I miss the '57 Willys I had. Undo bolt up top, remove cover, remove filter,reverse all that and NOT get OIL drop of oil on me or the ground !!!! Currently looking for a Willys FC-150.

Some clever person probably has a way to prefill the horizontal mount oil filters but I've never been able to figure it out. It wouldn't surprise me if there's someone out there who saturates the filtering media prior to installation i.e. fill up, let sit, drain and install.

I really like my '98 TJ. It has the 4.0L engine and AX15 5-speed transmission and many, many mods. I've had it for 25 years and drove it this morning to the post office and gas station.

Very true. I had one on my first '02 F350 Super Duty 7.3L but that was so that I could run two filters, one factory and one much finer, with the bypass feature of course.

While the validity of the test can be argued I do believe 100% that
most wear happens while the engine is warming up.

I remember NYC Crown Vic taxi cabs being sold at auction with 350K to 410K miles on them and they were still running.

The manual for the Kohler engine on my zero turn says this:

CHANGE OIL AND FILTER
Change oil while engine is warm.
1. Clean area around oil fill/dipstick. Remove drain plug
and oil fill/dipstick. Allow oil to drain completely.
2. Clean area around oil filter. Place a container under
filter to catch any oil and remove filter. Wipe off
mounting surface. Reinstall drain plug. Torque to
13.6 N·m (10 ft. lb.).
3. Place new filter in shallow pan with open end up. Fill
with new oil until oil reaches bottom of threads. Allow
2 minutes for oil to be absorbed by filter material.
4. Apply a thin film of clean oil to rubber gasket on new
filter.
5. Refer to instructions on oil filter for proper
installation.
6. Fill crankcase with new oil. Level should be at top of
indicator on dipstick.
7. Reinstall oil fill/dipstick and tighten securely.
8. Start engine; check for oil leaks. Stop engine; correct
leaks. Recheck oil level.
9. Dispose of used oil and filter in accordance with
local ordinances.

Since the filter is mounted sideways I thought that was dumb but I will try it and it worked with virtually no spillage.

While I won't lean one way or the other, there is the fact that oil in a filter flows from the outside to the inside. When prefilling that filter, you better make sure that no contaminants enter, because when you install the filter and start the engine, they have a straight shot at all your engines delicate parts. Just sayin!

The oil filter on my wife's Subaru is mounted upside down on top of the engine.
No prefilling that one!
It sure does make changing the filter east though.

Is there a drain in that "bowl" that allows the oil to flow into a container without making a complete mess?
