Intake blows white smoke, no start

Put the transmission in a forward gear and tow the machine forward. What way does the engine turn ?

Have you watched the direction of rotation when cranking? Are you certain the starter is rotating the engine in a CCW direction viewed from the very front?

As has been said the direction of rotation viewed from the flywheel side is CCW so viewing from front of engine it will be CW. Rotate the engine CW and check the valves are opening correctly and in the correct order which they will but just to make sure.

well it's confusing...
One website for the starter says it turns CW, which means engine will turn CCW. Well from the ringgear end of the crankshaft..... Need to know the 'frame of reference'. If looking at the crankshaft pulley, which way SHOULD the engine turn ?

Messicks says $450+- for starter, other guys $250+-...
From the flywheel side it rotates CCW so from the front view (crank pulley) it will rotate CW. With regards to the description for the direction of the starter rotation it’s hard to know whether they mean from the front or rear view of the starter itself. Have you confirmed for a fact that the crank pulley side is rotating CCW when you are cranking the engine?

So, I should have thought about this a bit earlier. Putting the tractor in gear and pushing it should reveal the rotational direction, right? The front pulley/shaft spins in the clockwise direction when pushed so, i ordered a replacement starter.

i thought I would go one step further and try to bump start it by pushing and dumping the clutch like my old Toyota pickup when the battery died. Was surprised when I dumped the clutch with it in 3rd and the tires locked up tight. Is the differential such that roll-starting is not possible?

Diesels tend to have a much higher compression ratio than gas engines so they present a higher 'load' when roll-starting.

This is another 'wish-I-was-there' problems.....
It'd be nice to see which way engine is spinning and the starter tag info.

You need to state which end you are looking at when you say a CW or CCW direction.

Someone already mentioned that CW looking at front of tractor is CCW when looking at the rear end of the tractor.

Also the starter spins one direction from the front end of tractor but will spin the engine in the opposite direction due to the two gears (starter and flywheel) being meshed and having to move in the same (straight) direction where the touch.

Easiest thing to do if you don’t have anyone to help is set your phone up to video the crank pulley (front engine view) and crank the engine for a second, then watch the footage back and you’ll know exactly what direction of rotation the engine is turning when the starter is engaged.

To clarify, the starter spun the crank in the CCW direction when looking at the tractor from the front ( see previous post with picture). When roll-starting in 3rd gear, the crank spun in the CW direction. New starter ordered. Appreciate all the responses and hope to return the good will. Great forum!

Man, we GOTTA KNOW what that original starter is for !!! Does it have a tag or number on it ???
Real curious as to what it's actually for.

Like just HOW do mechanics change a piston in a huge ship and NOT stop the engine.....
..at least that was solved today.

Hopefully your new starter will arrive PDQ and we can read 'sucess' !

So we now know why the tractor got parked by the other owners. The original started failed, they installed this one, and here we are now.

You probably had it in low range. Try it again in high range. You have made sure the clutch isn't frozen?

I’ve no experience with anything other than a “stuck” valve which is visually easy to detect as it does not move. For a sticking valve, is there a method of detecting?
Google "Leak down test". Basically you apply compressed air to a cylinder at or near TDC on compression stroke (in the case of a diesel, this will require an adapter to the glow plug opening) and listen to determine where the air is leaking out from. EG: If it's hissing out the intake when applied to #2 cylinder, then the #2 intake valve is not sealing.
