Measure length and width. If its oblong, round, or otherwise, break it down into many or few squares, right triangles, or rectangles. Do so and add the total of them all up.The wife suggested that we consider putting down sod instead of seeding it. I did some checking and it is about 68 cents per square foot. Just don't know how much that I will need. 1000 square feet minimum for delivery with a $65 delivery charge for 2 pallets if you order from one supplier, and another is higher priced, but no delivery fee. Just need to figure out how much we will need.
Examples are:
A 10 foot by 30 foot section is 300 SF (square feet): 10 x 30 = 300
30 by 40 feet section = 1200 SF
A 30 by 40 right triangle is: 30 times 40 times .5. Measure the 90 degree or perpendicular lines.
If you know trig, than do that. You won't need right triangles with trig. You make them. But you'll need to be able to measure at least one angle. Use a cheap protractor and a snap line. Trigonometric geometry.
If you have a drone with a good camera and some yard sticks, you could digitize it.
Back in the day we digitized off of blueprints, and added a percentage. They still do it that way today, but the software programs and digitizer tables are much better now.
Want 1" of topsoil... under your sod? formula is : Total SF divided by 12. That with give you CF. (Cubic Feet)
Want 2" of topsoil... Total SF divided by 6. That will give you CF.
Want that CF in CY (cubic yards). Take your CF total and divide it by 27.
Have fun with it.
