HST Problem

I'm unclear on your meaning here - do you think the volume of debris is "extremely large" or are you saying that since it isn't enough to clog the filter it might not be so large after all?

Dick - what I took Mike to mean, at first, was that the amount/volume of shavings were extreme.

I then gave him the link to the L3200 thread with similar condition. He said shavings looked the same, as in size/shape/color, but he had much less of them.

He said he did not think there were enough to plug the filter.

Those looked like the casting shavings I took from my BX screen at 50 hours. I could have filled a tablespoon....none since.

I took that as (hopefully) the HST components were not shredding...

I gave Mike some marching orders. Hopefully he will come back to report.

I sure hope it's an inexpensive fix....

Mike - were the filter(s) you took off painted gray or white?

Well Burks in Caldwell ID was able to get me into the schedule this afternoon. Initial survey indicates two distinct issues: the damper cylinder for the drive pedal, and a malfunctioning reversing valve which controls the drive direction with it stuck favoring reverse but allowing a crawl forward. We'll see what the report is in the morning after the technician completes his evaluation.

For those who wanted to know the outcome and final diagnosis, the winner is "bent linkage". The linkage from the drive pedal to the transmission was bent just enough to keep it from fully reversing the drive direction valves permitting just enough forward pressure to move the tractor. Repair costs will be minimal once parts are received.

Well that sounds hopeful. I looked up specifics on the L3200's HST - its a Type 5 design. These units have two neutral valves, one for forward, one for reverse. They normally open to drop pressure when the swash plate moves to mid-travel (neutral) so the tractor doesn't creep. I didn't know about these - my HST is a Type 2 that uses a servo-regulator instead.

If either neutral valve fails to close, drive pressure on that side would not build normally. Metal debris could be a cause.

BTW, I have a WSM for major components that shows this HST - TC220-59990. The WSM file is 32mb and limits access for printing(?) The neutral valves are shown toward the back on top.

EDIT - Mike - I just saw your good news !! Turns out your earlier mention of "pushing brush" was a big clue. Great outcome.

With this new development I thought about deleting most of this post but it could still be of interest to future readers.

The neutral valves are spring poppets - the WSM says they open automatically when the system is centered and the drive pressure goes low. The bent linkage was apparently keeping the swash plate from moving far enough. One or both was allowing flow, limiting drive pressure.

Mostly academic at this point, if its fixed. Please post the dealer's final detailed findings if possible. Take care, Dick B
