HST filter removal problem

I was trying to change the HST filter on my L4600 and have been unable to move with a filter strap wrench. Is there a special wrench. tractor has 460 hours

Well I got it off….. almost destroyed strap wrench. Chain wrench finally used a steel drift and hammer on the filter notches. After 3-4 good wacks it moved and was able to un screw by hand.

Stuck hydraulic oil filter

Trying to change both hydraulic oil filters on my L3301 tractor. One was no problem but the one on the starboard side is stuck big time. This is the first time change and I've read that the factory paint can glue the filter on. I guess I need a longer breaker bar for my strap type filter...

That was me with the stuck filter. Use a long cheater pipe on your strap wrench but never admit on here that you used WD40 even if it worked.

I had the same problem a while back - I started with a piece of sandpaper inside the strap for grip - then I found a device that uses grit INSIDE the strap - bought it and it works very well.

One still might need a cheater bar too!

I went to my local auto parts store and bought what looks like an adjustable plier type thing with vicious teeth for gripping. Worked great. My strap type wouldn't work either. Good luck.

Whatever wrench you use, place it as close to the bottom of the filter base as you can.
or better yet...
get the (*&%$^**( 'engineer' who designed the engine to remove the filter without having to spend 5 hours and $300 worth of gas to find THE wrench that WILL easily remove the filter.

The BEST filter design was on my '57 Willys Pickup. Top, dead center of the engine,EASILY undo one bolt,lift filter up,replace... you could do it in a tuxedo if need be.

Cap style don't work well? I ask because I've not yet changed the filters on my tractor yet. I was going to get the correct ones before even trying. I know the factory filters on any vehicle can be a bear.

for my HST filter it's a tight squeeze - I use a spanner wrench

18" channel lock never failed me but once or twice. In those cases, air hammer on the notched base. Comes loose every time.

An indispensable tool, for difficult to remove oil filters, and many other uses!

That Hydraulic filter is just plain nasty. I have read and watched everything on this stuck filter and thought I was ready for my battle with the 50 hour break in maintenance... I was not. After breaking a three prong Amazon filter wrench, a strap wrench I found the magic combo for me. I mangled the filter before success, losing about 8 quarts in the process of an overnight leak from the mangled filter. You should only lose a few quarts if you change both filters quickly.
I don't believe the painting over the filter at the factory theory now that I have completed this trip to maintenance hell. It's just that Hydraulic filter is a super stressed, pressure filter. My magic combo for success was a vise grip style filter wrench with box wrench cheater. I first broke it loose (about 3/8" movement) with the large visegrip clamp seen in the photo. Good luck.

My local place didn't have the exact cap wrench but don't feel it would work from the experience I had. All other filters come off easily. Just the hydraulic filter is a mother.

I did find a cap type that fit the three filters. However, the factory paint made those caps unusable at removing the original filters. A strap was needed to remove the original filters. Future changes should be easier with the cap wrench.
