If you was going to look for something like a 1998 GMC extended cab 4WD and wanted to find one with a good rust free frame how far south of Maine would you go?

Anywhere there isn’t a lot of salt or brine used on the road in the winter and inland enough to not be exposed to salt water/brackish water. On the east coast I’d say North Carolina is kind of borderline. Virginia and north, I’d be really careful. South Carolina and south, wouldn’t be concerned unless from a coastal area.

Mexico.

Not Mexico, New York.

Just kidding.

As a born and raised Upstate New York person, I’d be guessing. Never traveled much.

Lot of folks in the eastern US here on OTT. Be curious of their recommendations.

You might have to go to at least TN and maybe into Northern GA, AL, or MS. The problem is that salt is used in most states in the East and even if not, there is salt spray near the coast.

I think the most rust free older vehicles I’ve seen are probably in WA/OR, but they do use chemicals in Winter that are also corrosive.

You should look at Carfax etc and see where the vehicle has been though not where it is right now.

Im in maine too and a long time ago bought a 1990 GMC truck from a lobsterman in Harpswell, who lived on the water..salt water of course. so it had a whole lot of rust between that and salted roads.

Im in the market for a mid 2000s half ton and thought about looking in Florida,

I think that was supposed to be a funny graph. At least, it has little to do with rusted cars. ;)

What is this 'rust' of which you speak?? 🤔

Just kidding. Stay away from the coast in the 'Sun Belt' and you will be rust free. Of course, there is always a chance that an 'import' might have sneaked in from the Glaciated North.

GF's dad just sold his for $4,000 cash. 98 ext cab 1500 4x4 (not z71), 101,000 original miles. He bought it new. ZERO rust. One ding in the bed corner from it getting backed into, hardly noticeable (he pointed it out to me).

The whole rust thing makes me glad I don't live in the rust belt anymore!! Although, I see many a Ram with rusted bed sides around here. Typical Dodge.

I used to purchase a car, boat, RV, or off road toy every other year, when I went to visit my mom in So Cal. I’ve found along with being rust free, a lot of vehicles in town, do not have a lot of use on them. Low miles, low hours, etc.
Mostly just new tires, due to age not being wore out. Two vehicles had a dead battery, and the owners went out and bought a new one, then offed the old one cheap.
