Fuel prices

Had some firewood delivered last Friday. The logger said the bulk diesel was $6.30 a gallon leaving $0. profit in trucking logs and chips that don't pay to even fill the tank. They have a big crew of men and at the point of laying off.
I was out today and traveling thru southern Maine I took this photo. Diesel was $6.40 a gallon. The country as a whole is on a downwards slide. I have quite a few very very wealthy customers who monitor many sectors of inflation and say they see no end to it with the current goverment policys in place. I know NO Political talk here. So I'll leave it at that. Everything is trucked. Everything. Food beer lumber ect. A slippery slope we are on.

There has been 10 recessions in the US during my lifetime. An economic reality that many people refuse to educate their children about. Then it comes as a big surprise.
The fuel prices will bankrupt some small companies that failed to build a capital reserve. Companies with reserves will survive and then thrive when the curve turns around.
I do have sympathy for the local farmers as most of them are the edge ALL the time. I'll pay more and avoid the box stores.
I'm on a more or less fixed income so I do feel the pain but it will pass. Yelling at the politicians is like howling at the moon. Feels good but does nothing.

Wow, I filled my Dodge (diesel) yesterday for $4.73 in Olathe, Ks.

It's $5.09 to $5.19 here

$5.28 for road diesel here. Thankfully, off road diesel is about 50 cents a gallon less.

Went to lunch and diesel was $5.30 a gallon and regular was $4.39. This morning regular was $4.19, so I wonder if diesel is about to jump again.

I try hard to support local business. But a favorite small restaurant is closed a lot due to inflation and owner can't find help. I'm sure the same all over.

Well, on the plus side, Ammo prices came down a bit. Found 5.56 for .47 a round, and copper plated .22 for .07 per round. Stocking up while I can. With diesel costs going up, get it while shipping is still free.

I bought a 50 gallon tank for my tractors, have yet to fill it up, afraid to find out what it will cost, and only found one place I can fill with the red stuff, and it is 60 miles away, in the town where my job is, but I work from home. I don't know what the current price is on it either.

just got hosed for $4.33/gal reg unleaded gas and $6.60/gal diesel. Holy fk!

Maybe it was a good idea to get the Ram with a gas engine?

I just got a Gas Buddy card, it saved my .06 per gallon recently, but it wasn't for a full tank, so only saved .57 cents, however it also has a $75 limit, so I have to fill it above a half tank for a full fill. Thankfully I am close to the border to WI and can save up to .70 a gallon going 18 miles RT.

Diesel OTOH is the same in both states which boggles my mind since IL has higher taxes on Diesel. I use a TSD card AKA Open Roads. Prices range from $4.57, 34 miles away to $5.40, 16 miles away. On 75 gallons that equates to a $62 savings.

A little closer, 20 miles, it is $4.67, or a $55 savings. BUT, using Gas Buddy, a station 2 miles away has Diesel for $4.71. The prices are crazy strange, and Truckers are taking the brunt of it because majority of the TSD places are major truck stops like TA, Loves, Petro etc. The main problem I have, the pumps at the Gas Buddy stations shut off at $75, where the TSD stations shut off when the tank is full. Try filling a 50 gallon portable tank when it shuts off @ $75. It would take over 3 swipes to fill the tank, provided the card doesn't get flagged.

My BIL had started replacing his diesel delivery trucks with gas because the emission system problems were keeping them in the shop. If this price differential holds, he's gonna look like a genius.

Could be. But, the 7.5 mpg of my gasser stings just a little bit

Depending on how far and what type of driving, even with diesel being more expensive, the price averages out to be the same. For where I drive, 60 miles one way to the office on 55 MPH county roads cruise set to 61 MPH for an average overall speed of 45 MPH, I get 21 MPG in my F150 and 19.7 in the F350. A new 2022 F350 will get close to the 21 MPG of the 3.5 Ecoboost in the same driving as it is more fuel efficient than the 2012.

The 7.3 gas gets ~ 13 MPG average, maybe a little more, more likely a little less. A 7 MPG difference at this rate is huge. the smaller the starting number, the higher the percentage. If we were talking a 7 MPG increase from 40 MPG, then not that big a deal, but starting at 13, its huge. I don't have the numbers in front of me, nor care to work them out at this moment, but I had calculated out, without regards to maintenance cost, but did include DEF, and the difference in costs worked out that diesel was actually less expensive than gas, based on a 33,000 mile per year average @ 13 MPG vs 20 MPG.

Maintenance does cost a bit more on the diesel, but DIY makes up some of the cost. The main difference is that you have more than twice the torque, which means if you tow, the diesel is king of the road, and worth the extra bit of cost for maintenance.

I am looking at a 2020 Denali 2500HD to replace my F150 and F350, If I can get a decent trade on both trucks, I am looking at cutting my costs between both trucks by as much as $500 a month.
