Those cylinders with the rust are pretty rough. At minimum I’d run a hone in them and check for pitting. If they are too far gone they will continue to cut the sealing rings.

Best part: whenever it's moving heavy earth, she bog down seem like she gonna shut off, nope

She keep churning earth 🌎

Carve you serious amount of earth with L295DT

Make you one statement:

These machines way better than modern skid loader and worth twice as much in gold/cash because:

Your normal state when you churn earth is NO INPUT from operator, meaning

Put you that gear, drop you that cluch, and she is churning earth and you are just hanging out

Compare that to the modern skid loader:

It needs INPUT from operator at all time when it is carving earth

IE: all skid loaders are inferior/annoying

Real ones working in the field understand

Cold, she run fine and no issue

When she get hot, I notice bigger leak from this area, diesel line from the tank to the engine, I think the valve that close the tank is leaking

You are moving serious earth, she is getting hot in temperature, this line lose its prime, and engine sputter off

exact pattern before she sputter out:

smoke start to come out this vent once she get hot then it is likely to die off under big load

few possibilities: there is only water in the engine, no coolant, maybe coolant keep it lower temperature

the diesel line: suspicion: that line from tank to engine need to be fully sealed or else engine will pull in air pockets and sputter out

there was no problem but the hydraulics, bucket stuck scraping ground, and engine cant drag it,

drag you back L295DT to the shop, fully attack all the issue:

Take you off all hydraulic cylinder, do surgery and try to seal them with gasket maker, and

address all other hydraulic leaks, when I look inside transmission, the fluid is bubbly, meaning

you are pulling air into the system from somewhere

seal you up all your hydraulics, fill it up with fluid

I point here to the ring that hold in the cylinder, last time spent too much effort dealing with it, maybe my protocol wrong, my protocol:

seal up the cylinder, then hammer the ring in millimeter by millimeter, takes too much time



is the protocol:

put ring in then close the cylinder over the ring, it will take less time doing this

let me know which is correct

take you off all 4 cylinders, take them apart, clean them with intent, then

glob you bunch of gasket maker to seal where the hydraulic fluid oozing out

from what i remember and the looking at the diagram, you can seal that part where the cylinder moves up/down, there is rubber seal there

if gasket maker cant seal it, then get you the proper seals made for them etc

Also, your plumbing that you did on the hydraulic system is causing air to get into your lines, and its causing your hydraulic fluid to bubble up

I do notice I can work hydraulics when cold, but after a bit the pump start whining, and if you look inside transmission, you see bubbly fluid

figure you out where the leaks are in your plumbing, maybe melt you some bronze on the leaks

no way to take apart cylinder without removing the ring, almost destroyed it trying to air chisel it

to get to the leaking area, unscrew this part and the rest of it should come out

figure something out where you get something hold on to it tight, then hammer on that

yes, you found a way to unscrew top of cylinder

put one side back onto the bucket, now she is hold tight, you you massive pipe wrench, torch hard soak in diesel

tired of dealing these 45 year old leaky cylinders, destroying them trying to fix them, so grateful that you got them apart and can move show forward

might've found a way to save big $$ by rebuilding your own cylinders, rebuild your cylinders try to seal them

so grateful you got it apart, and you can see the pathway of the leak, dirt trail going through all the seals

clean you everything surgically, get you gasket maker and build back with gasket maker and clean seals and let it cure, do that for all 4 cylinder

make you workstation out of pallet, clean everything with solvent/air, take you out all the seal, who care if some break, gob everything in gasket maker

keep you going, taking them apart, sealing them up in this way, and sealing up all the fitting, anywhere there is hydraulic pressure, you seal

Lift cylinders are welded on, grind everything down, hit hard with small torch and maybe big torch, sledehammer and big chisel, get you out one pin, get in there and do surgery on both cylinder

yes I listen, I have not pump hydraulic into it yet, let it cure, i was fixing to remove lift cylinder

hit you both pin with grinding wheel until you see separation, then soak in diesel, hit hard with torches, smack with sledgehammer

For any poor soul that runs across this thread, this is 100% a DO NOT DO ANY OF THIS THREAD!


ALL that RTV running around in the hydraulics system and transmission is going to mess everything up and you'll have even more issues than you can ever deal with.
The RTV will hold for about a millisecond before it jettisons off into the valve, the transmission, the gears, the filter and the pump!

Too bad you didn't take that bolt out adjacent to the pin weld you are grinding on.
That is what is holding the pin in, not the weld.

I hate to say it, but this project is getting way worse instead of better every day.
The silicone is going to finish off the hydraulic system.

Well, it was predicted by many at the beginning of this thread that the tractor engine would never run again. But the tractor is pushing some sand around today.

In a way this thread is a testament to the value of sweat & hard work, at least in the short term.

Amazing to me, but when I think back on what has been done to the tractor during the term of this thread, I’m having trouble remembering anything that I would do the same way! I honestly mean anything! There must be something…

Perhaps time for another challenge: "What did Joe do that you would do?”

Another thing, he takes a lot of good pictures of his work. That takes patience. I almost never stop to clean my hands to take a picture when tinkering on something.

something with the fitting is not right, dont worry about figuring it out,

label you each line 1 through 6, take you off all the line, take you off all fitting, clean everything then compress air

glob you ton of gasket maker, you seal up all fitting with militaristic intent,

build it back up SEALING EVERYTHING and put your lines back in place since they are labeled

diesel leak: try to see where it is located or take everything off and build everything back up surgically sealing with solvent/air/gasket maker

the leak definitely big enough to cause your engine to shut down at normal throttle

get you a cut off disc, cut into it, get a nail and hit the ring until it come out toward you, go in there with surgically stuff to pull it out

that ring is the reason why people give up and get new cylinder,

get you inside that cylinder and do you the surgery to seal it

summary: you declare all your leak, then you attack all your leak, and rebuild you the two cylinders with escalated effort on that ring


first task you do, witness you some magic

dont play with that big flame in the worldly state, only play with the big flame right when you wake up

only to find out, all you had to do was spin the cylinder and reveal you the ring to grab, and yank on it and spin more and it come out

2 hours of maniacal destruction for nothing, unbelieveable

I bet there is a really smart way to do this, you would pump pressure into the side you want to push and it would pop it out

fill it with transmission fluid and acetone, leave it alone, go take off other lift cylinder
