Going back together. I made up some replica removable dowel pins for the clutch housing. In theory, you put a nut on the threads and they will back out of the blind holes. That is if they don't rotate. This will be the next guys' problem. Anyway, installed them and then attached the clutch housing without drama.

This is a sure sign of aging! A few short years ago I would have crawled underneath to blast this for paint. The thought of doing that so disgusted me I took the time to do this. I am happy!

Getting old is a bitch. It does have one advantage though. When the wife says "why did you need to buy another toy" you can say " 1st off the term is tool and it helps with what I can't physically do any more"
Well, I wanted to get the paint on the tractor before cottonwood season but it came early this year and stayed well beyond its welcome. So I basically left it alone waiting for the right conditions to paint and clear coat it outside. Friday I applied the color and today was the clear coat. Came out well! After it hardens up properly I will get the engine married up to the torque tube. Stay tuned!
Got the engine married up to the torque tube with no drama. My clutch alignment tool worked with flying colors. My next goal is to make it a 'roller' so I started sand blasting the front bolster and after a bit the executive decision was made to farm out the blasting. I just don't have the compressor to handle all the parts and face it, life is short! Stay tuned
I've been dreading painting the rear wheels and weights because they are awkward and heavy. A few short decades ago it would have been no problem laying these out flat and flipping them over by brute force. But that was then and this is now. So I came up with this setup and with the aid of the L3901 with the fork attachment I mounted the wheels and weights so I could spray them with the hardest part being the kneeling down to get the underneath. I can feel the kneeling days are coming to an end in the future but for now, mission accomplished!
Using a tractor to assemble a tractor. In keeping with the theme of not doing heavy lifting by hand, I used the forks on my L3901 to set up the wheels and add the weights before installing them on the axles.
I really wish I lived closer. I would have loved to photoshoot this project as you went along.

This is the front of the tractor and it supports the front wheels and the steering gear. There is wear on the top bore below where the hardened gear for the worm drive steering system lives. Probably no big deal but I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could true this up somehow. I came up with a setup using the top surface where the cover plate attaches.
Did a bit of measuring and it appeared that I could do this on my milling machine. Dug out a plate that I used for facing odd parts on the big lathe and clamped this to the table. I swung the head of the machine over and positioned it so I could both make the fixture and face the bore with my boring head with auto feed.

Here is what my setup looks like on the mill. I started by drilling a center hole for the 4" hole saw. Next I marked the plate and then drilled two holes that will allow the shavings from the hole saw to clear out because this plate is 1" thick. I then drilled the holes to match the bolt circle on the top of the bolster and then mounted it to the mill.
Here is the setup ready to machine. Put a jack stand underneath to support it so it would take some stress off the table. Chucked up my boring head and made several light passes to clean up the face. Happy with the results!

Note high $$ quillmaster, much nicer and newer mill, .0001 DRO, alodyned part, near cleanroom conditions, static sensitive warning sign, and FOG poster on unused door.
Item being machined is part of a fixture to mount a gyro on an ultra precision rate table inside a temperature controlled chamber.

But this is how the other two look.
I decided to counterbore both holes on the mill and then I will make a bushing that will lightly press fit into the bore so the bolt pressure displacement is spread out.
As you can see there was a little breakout through the wheel but it will not be an issue. The stress is really carried through the side 'gussets'. That's it for this week and I'll post the final repair later next week.

Updating on some progress. Painting the front end parts has probably been my least favorite thing so far. Just a PIA! But anyway, getting closer to having a 'roller' tractor.
