Easier way of pulling down ROPS for storage

I used the cranks from an old set of pump jacks. Drilled a hole and connected with small screws, washers and nuts. Tethered to clip with crimped wires. turns of the crank gets it done.

I love the ingenuity and function but that would drive me crazy banging around with the way I use mine

Hey All,

I just got an L4701 and the ROPS are like 1 or 2 inches too tall to get the tractor in the barn. In any case, I went to take the pin and bolt out and it was a beast to get unscrewed and screwed back in... so much so that my tractor is currently parked outside because I really dont want to spend 20 mins getting the bolts on and off to store the tractor.

So, posting my first post here... becuase I'm 100% there is a trick to making that proccess easier. Do i need to grease that bolt, iuse a tool of some sorts, build a bigger barn? Whats a functional way to get that ROPS up and down but only take a few mins to remove/replace that bolt?

Suggestion:
Build a bigger barn,....... and change the tractor model to an L47 TLB.
You got the "L47" correct, , .......but the 01 part is wrong.

My shop’s double doors are too short for the ROPS so I’m always putting it up or down.

Since this is a pole/metal building, modifying the doors is an option. I thought about pulling out the doors and installing a roll-up door. I can pick one up at the factory which is about 80 miles away. That door is about $1300.

The other option is to add a horizontal door above the double door that I can raise and lower as I go in and out. It’s a simple matter of moving the 2x6 headers up about two feet. I’ve got some material that I can make a door out of and then, add a simple frame on the backside of the new horizontal door. That frame will act to catch the tops of the doors and I can add latches on each side along with weather stripping along all of the edges of an interior three sided frame. A rope, a pulley or two, a cleat and it’s good to go.

I also need to add louvers and an exhaust fan to help vent the building. These will be good fall projects…. and maybe a lean-to on the side too. Thank goodness I’m retired. Lol

On a few occasions the rubber cap on one the end at the folding ROPS has come dislodged, which binds things up & makes it very difficult to screw in the bolt. Otherwise, with a little grease once applied, the bolt may be turned in or out in 20 seconds.

Okay I have a different idea, low profile tractor tires. Got a Pasquali Tractor for my brother and all the rims were rust(calcium chloride) and tires dry rotted. Welded in some temporary patches, about one gallon of rtv(to make smoother, 4 tubes and some used tires(225/50R16) that were 3/32nds. Wish I had some pictures of it sitting, but here is a stock picture. Just imagine 1 inch tire height.

Grind a slot in a cheap impact socket to fit the goofy bolt heads snugly, and burn em in & out with an impact. Costs about 3 bucks and some time with a grinding wheel.

The ugga-dugga gun takes no shit, and makes it a breeze.

Going with Run with Scissors Except REAM ( not drill ) HOLE & NUT to make fit as tight as possible / with a pin you are going to destroy the threads anyway.

To solution the ease of raising and lowering the ROPS. I installed spinner knobs on the thru bolts. I no longer have to get a wrench and a ratchet to tighten or loosen the upper folding ROPS arm. The spinners stay nice and tight by hand,they are not going anywhere.. Easy fast and convenient. McMaster Carr has them..

I did not alter the threads in any way.

I ground the Lynch pin down at the tip so I could reuse the original bolts if I ever wanted too.

I guess I’m lucky…. My “barn” doors are 14’ tall, so I don’t have a problem. Even my house, when I drove up to the garage, turns out the rops is about 2” less than my eves overhang, so as long as I didn’t have to go into the garage (can’t see a reason to), I don’t have to remove anything.

of course, I did find out I have to be a bit more careful when driving under trees that I always went under when mowing…. sigh.
